The title says it all. This promo for "The Wire" Season 5, is funnier than ninety percent of the "comedy" on TV.

It's perfect. McNulty, drunk, hooking up, battling his demons (or giving in to them?) and being hilarious while doing it.

*POSSIBLE SPOILERS from first four seasons*

The fifth and final season of the universally agreed upon greatest show on televison debuts in January. Exciting... and sad. No more Wire... ever. I did a similar piece awhile back on the final season of "Battlestar Galactica," but I'll miss "The Wire" more for the simple reason that, in four seasons, not a single episode has ever been anything less than amazing. Every one is perfect. It's like a bizarro-world version of "According to Jim."

Honestly, watching an epiode of "The Wire" is like gazing through a TV-sized hole into another living, breathing world. It's uncannily vivid and for lack of a better way to say it, real. Every episode ends the same way; me, sitting on my couch, a dopey look on my face, thinking...

"What the fuck... How... Are things allowed to be that good? Was it too good? Is someone gonna burst into my apartment now and rob me just so the universe can balance itself out? Oh no, is that my doorknob jiggling?! No, just the neighbor... but how about that episode. So fucking good. It hurts a little bit. That show fucking hurt me! Son of a bitch... Uh oh, the others are looking at me, I better say something..."

You know how you know it's perfect? You know 'cause when you try to tell someone who the best character is, this is what happens.

"Well, Mcnulty's the best, such a great, flawed anti-hero... Though, speaking of anti-heroes, Omar is pretty amazing... and Bunk! Bunk is hilarious... Presbo, he's cool... Lester, of course, can't forget him... Haha! Lester... I love Landsman, too! Always scurrying aroung doing the dirty work for Rawls... Herc and Carver are hilarious. Avon was bad-ass. Can't forget about Kima, she was--

This eventually ends with me complimenting the fine work of the guy who was in two episodes as Convenience Store Clerk #3. Every character is that great.

And soon we'll have all the answers...

-Will McNulty give in to his urges and finally drink Baltimore dry?

- Will Omar's mom ever again feel comfortable going to church on Sunday in a large red hat?

- Will Chris Partlow and Snoop settle their "will they, won't they" tension, once and for all?

- Does the "obsidian god," Cedric Daniels once again engage in an uncomfortably personal and drawn out sex scene? And will he reveal his rock-hard ab secrets?

- Will Bunk ever avoid the dreaded cut-off tie wall?

- Will Bubbs (holy shit, I forgot about Bubbs until just now, that's how great the show is) bounce back and turn his lucrative shopping cart, plain white-T business into a powerhouse rival for Wal-Mart?

- Will Prop Joe's store ever be visited by someone with actual pawn shop business?

- Will Cuddy bang and then quickly disappoint any more middle-aged ghetto moms?

- Will Attorney Levy ever not steal a scene?

- Will I ever find out if what crab chips taste like? I think I'd like them.

Time will tell.

TheCoolerKing says R.I.P. Bodie... you will be missed. Unfortunately, his local flower shop doesn't stock arrangments in the shape of "the towers."

I love McNulty as the drunk anti-hero, and actually found his S4 clean-up a little...boring. But I hate to think of anyone pulling this shit on Beadie Russell! That's life, I s'pose...

Never seen an episode of The Wire.

But the best "comedy" is always in "drama". Just like the best "action" is in "drama" and so on. You care about the story and the characters, it makes everything better. Too bad it's just easier to find a "funny" actor and write a script around him with "funny" lines.

...Shit, I think I broke my quotation mark key...

Well heres a conundrum.. what if the Red Hot Chili Peppers were in "The Wire"? Would your head explode as your world of perfect collides with something you despise?

I thought it was hilarious. I have been hoping McNulty would be himself again i.e. get drunk and completely fuck a good thing he has going.

Shame about Bodie, though. I really wanted him to make it to a better place.

You joke, but he had a great scene where Marlow's boys lead him off and he gets that resigned look on his face...classic.

Holy shit! Did you actually just type "not," as a punchline? Tell me you're joking or... something.

Ahh man... I'm actually concerned for you. I'm too lazy to click but if you're under fifty and not someone's goofy uncle, you should really think about running your thoughts by someone before you speak.

I've read the article three times and I'm still not really sure if TCK loves the show, or is making fun of the fact that everyone who likes the show is constantly going on about how it's the greatest thing that ever has been.

I watched season 1 and thought it was pretty good, but it didn't impress me to the point of making me track down the other seasons. Shows without monsters or robots don't hold my attention anymore.

Oh, you totally picked my intentionally unfunny line to pieces. Destroy that sucker. Pig out on it like a group of Jehova's Witnesses on a Jew. Be ferocious!

Right... So, tell me how using it when you're aware it's unfunny makes it even slightly better? Or funnier?

Trust me, the fact that I assumed you were using that word sincerely does not reflect well on your last few posts...

You're a tool. You bore people. Go lie down.

Oh, I love the show. More than I love most people, places and things.

Hah, I guess I can see what you mean...

And, I would totally read a fan fiction mash-up of the Wire crew tracking down robots and monsters. Holy shit, would I read that...

It's sad that it's about to end, but it's also perfect. There will never be a bad season.

No, because then I wouldn't have been able to enjoy this:

He really was SHOCKINGLY buff. And lithe. And he kind of glistened. It was weird.

It is high time we got back to McNulty. He has not been featured much lately. I want to see him blow up, or whatever.

I also hope there is more Omar!

I'm just starting on season 3 on DVD, so I can't watch the trailer, alas. But I will say this - I don't ever want a TV show I love to continue indefinitely. This may sound weird, but there are two principles at work. #1: telling a single perfectly scripted arc is infinitely preferable to just making up some new shit every time the network renews your show. You can kind of fake it season by season (Buffy and Angel did that pretty well), but the long form is what TV is best suited to, and a multi-season story is just about the most satisfying thing there is. #2: the longer you run, the better the chances of going wildly astray, be it because some crucial person doesn't want to do the show anymore (or dies), or because the network(s) are no longer content to let you do your thing unmolested. So as much as the prospect of no new The Wire is an unhappy one, it's infinitely preferable to the alternative.

Just look at what happened to Oz.

The problem, however, is that you could replace New 'Wire' Promo with just about any set of words and it would still be true. Examples:

"Recent Bowel Movement Funnier Than Entire Run of 'Two and a Half Men'"

"Lost Existential Examination into the Human Condition by Ingmar Bergman Funnier Than Entire Run of 'Two and a Half Men'"

"Horrific War Footage of Atrocities Committed in the Balkans Funnier Than Entire Run of 'Two and a Half Men'"

You see? Each equally true.
