Am I the only one that thinks adhesive foam sounds a little scary?

Hrm.

Overall, interesting article. Wal-Mart surprises me. Bush's administration doesn't.

Yeah, because it's some sexist conspiracy to disempower women, and not a simple fact of it being cheaper and easier to manufacture.

Well, in most instances women pay more for hair cuts--yes, even when they get the exact same cut and service as a guy--and when I go to the dry cleaner I am charged more for my shirts than his.

I don't think it is a conspiracy, really, because that implies that there is some sort of secrecy about the whole deal. What I think it IS - is bullshit.

I found a cleaner who [now] charges the same price for my shirts and his shirts and I go to a hairdresser who charges us the same pirce for a wash and cut (we both have long, layered hair), unless I ask for more services (like dry and style).

EDIT: Gringo makes a valid point regardng the pricing. My point was not sepcifically about the condoms, but about the fact that unexplainable higher prices on things for women (vs. men's items) is not uncommon.

While the F.D.A. designates male condoms as Class 2 medical devices _ meaning that a new maker has to pass tests only for leakage and bursting _ it puts female condoms in Class 3, the same category as pacemakers, heart valves and silicone breast implants.

. . . the Class 3 listing means that any new design must pass clinical trials, which would cost $3 million to $6 million.

One's going outside a body, much like a surgical latex glove.

One's going inside a body... much like a pacemaker, heart valve or silicone breast implant.

That's why. And don't give me any technical nonsense about how technically the male condom goes inside the female body becase it's still ATTACHED to the male organ, whereas the female condom adhere to the inside of the vaginal walls.

I just thought I'd clear that up in case somebody somehow thought that this was because of some sort of sexism (as is inferred in everything BitchPhD writes).

Great article!

A male pill would definately be a good thing. Clinical trials to date show that this has far less potential health risks for men, than the female counterpart has proven to be for women. Not sure about the IVD blocks though... surgical procedures give me the heebies.

One thing I'd like to toss out there though... is that there are techniques from Tantric and Taoist sexual yogas that involve "withholding techniques," which prevent ejaculation and are very effective means of birth control. These techniques produce what I call "ingasms" and are actually more of an earth shattering experience for men than normal male orgasms. Of course this requires training, practice, discipline and a general orientation towards health and an active lifestyle. This may fly in the face with America's love affair with fast-food, obesity and diabetes... and this society's "can't someone else do it for me?" mindset.

I've got an idea, let's all go get vasectomies. Because vasectomy means never having to say, "I'm sorry."

I agree. It's tough to get one if you're under 30 without kids already.

But really, you ladies would trust us to remember to take a pill every day?

Opposing arguments to what exactly? Those condoms/pills are being made, so...not really sure what you want people to argue. The merits of birth control?

No. I thought it sounded pretty darn scary too. One can only wonder if it feels like removing a band-aid from inside your vagina. Ouchies. frown

Same here. I would go so far as to say I am stunned that they are including contraceptive meds in their reduced prescription program.

Can't both types of condom (regular and oppressed) be for men and women? I mean, doesn't at least one man and one woman need to be involved for contraception to occur? (I'm not a scientist, or anything, so I don't know...)

Now if only they'd make a non-lubricated polyurethane male condom so that felatio doesn't result in a nasty taste in the mouth.
