A modern legend [1] claims that there are 13 crystal skulls worldwide, of which five have actually been found, which have mystical powers and are of ancient origin.

Didn't that legend originate in the movie House II?

Having looked up the plot of that movie, I think my brain has shrunk.

my most recent journal entry:

So...I just saw the trailer for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I am met with excitement and disappointment.

I am excited because, as a kid, I loved the Indiana Jones movies. I remember seenig Raider of the Lost Ark in the theater when it first came out. I remember watching all three movies over and over on my vcr at home. To this day...I can recite every line of dialogue for all three movies from memory. Also...I own a fedora and a bullwhip. You coudl say...I'm a fan.

I am disappointed because what I saw in the trailer is exactly what I feared. They've taken a franchise based on film noir/pulp fiction themes and turned it into a modernized shell. The special effects shown in the trailer were very modern & impressive. They were also out of place.

I'm still going to go see the movie...and it will probably be good...but it won't be great...and that's what I feared.

Some of the effects looked a bit ropey to me when I first watched it... but then I watched the high res version, and it looked much better. Why did you think they're out of place, Cash? It's bound to have some CGI, which is fine by me if it's done well. Badly done computer effects are so jarring.

I really enjoyed the trailer, but I don't know how representative it is of the whole film - there's not much sense of the plot, and some notable cast members are absent (or as good as)... But Indy looks good, and I think there's every reason to be optimistic.

Because the Indiana Jones movies were always plot driven...and special effects...while extraordinary in their day...were secondary. They weren't a neceaasry part of the movie.

But the trailer is designed to quickly draw audiences with short attention spans. Hence all the explosions. The effects didn't do anything to make me nervous about the movie. They haven't gone to ridiculous Star Wars-esque CGI. I'll be seeing it. I think it will be a solid movie and won't rape the good memories I have. And that's after sitting through three shitty Star Wars movie and the god awful Transformers movie.

I wouldn't worry about it unless the finished film is absolutely swamped in over the top computer effects.. which is a possibility, I suppose, with Lucas involved. But I'm sure I read a while back how keen Spielberg was to keep the real, physical look of stunts and effects as far as possible.

And off the top of my head, I can remember some dodgy visual effects (or at least they look dodgy now) that weren't particularly integral to the plot in Last Crusade, and that film survived pretty well.

i loved the movie, even though it was a little heavy with the CGI (sometimes distractingly so). the first 20 minutes had me worried, and there were bits throughout where i felt like animals were used not only as cute garnish but unnecessary plot devices, but then it really picked up. i'll probably go see it again before the end of the weekend.
