Personally, I still shoot for a chivalrous attitude toward the fairer sex. I was raised old fashioned - my dad was in his 50's when I was born - but more than that, I have an insatiable craving for fantasy novels, comic books, and so on. I've always admired the heroes that took care of women, looking for nothing in return, and so I try, in my own small way, to be that guy. I don't assume that women are less capable than I am; its simply a matter of courtesy, from my perspective.

I don't know, people seem to be pretty down on school dances in here...

I went to one while I was in high school, and I had a great time!

Of course, I was high on LSD and spent the evening drawing pictures in the condensation covering the walls.

You rock. Because of a lot of things, but also, and right now mainly, this.

And rocking is, of course, the most noble female sensibility.

Our school dances generally involved blowjobs in the middle of 200 people on the floor and white kids acting obnoxious as far away from the blacks as they could possibly get.

For god's sake, daddy, don't teach her that empowerment means playing the old-fashioned girl who waits to be asked and waits to have sex.

True but she'll just invite the guy home make a bad semi-drunken after prom decision then cry rape after she changes her mind in the middle of it.

figured I'd throw my women hate rant in with your man hating one.

A) That was the last thing you'd want to say in the presence of feminists - which, as illustrated on this site, make up the majority of informed women. Hell, even your average Paris-Hilton-skank would pause for a second and say, "Did...he just like, say 'women hate'?"

B) Feminists don't hate men. What are you, 12? I truly hate it when any time a female makes some kind of pro-women assertion, the first thing men do is check to make sure their balls are still there. Cut the fucking crap.

you realize you're being totally hypocritical, right? Who made this a feminist argument, anyway? Just because it's about daughters?

How 'bout this: our teenage boys should not need to play up to archaic expectations as delineated by this sheltered dad guy. Teen girls and boys should be on equal footing and value themselves and their values enough to not need to parade some ridiculous idea of how adolescents should behave.

Where the fuck do you smell man hate in this whole thread?

Explain. Please.

Are you just jealous because everyone else uses these big words and you don't understand?

This is Tallboy66's usually shtick in any Bitch_Phd thread. I think he thinks it makes him "edgy". Just seems stupid and repetitive to me.

Well, that's nice, but why not expand that courtesy to include 'taking care of' the men you come across, aswell as the women?
Being 'chivalrous' means you're only helpful to half the population, being 'a nice person' means you're helpful to everyone. Surely its better to be the latter.

I like it when a guy buys me a drink or holds a door, but I also like it when a girl does it for me. And I like seeing guys do those things for each other, and girls do those things for each other. People should stop using terms like 'chivalry' to put gender division into the simple concept of being friendly and helpful.

Good luck on selling the concept of men being "chivalrous" to one another.

Kudos to the at least one person pointing out that "chivalry" tends to not mean what the person using it thinks that it means. But then again it also doesn't even mean that, at least in its original form.

But I'll accept the "Stars Are Right" moment and admit that I agree with Jennifer_: I think "courtesy" would be the better overall goal, and that's really what "chivalry" has been conflated with in modern common parlance.

I don't treat men or women any better than each other, but I tend to reserve a certain level of 'chivalry' to a lady I'm intimate with. I am always respectful to my girlfriend in that sense, but will always accept if she offers to pay for a meal instead of me (just as an example - we tend to do shifts on who pays for what wink). Plus, I tend to find men do have a certain level of chivalry to each other, it just manifests in completely different ways.

Plus the guy in this article? He's not offensive, as far as I can tell. Just old fashioned, kind of like my dad is. No, I don't agree with what he's saying - it is rather medieval. But there is a tendency amongst types of parents to believe they know best for their kids - good giref, we've all been there. I imagine his intentions are to make sure his daughter meets a good as opposed to selfish guy. It is rooted in paranoia than truth, but it's just what a parent does - often saying foolish and doing foolish things that younger people consider faintly ridiculous or offensive. No, it's not the 1950s anymore, but I don't think he's trying to oppress anyone exactly. I imagine a generation of parents here will themselves be worried about how their child will be when they hit their teens, and what's best for them.

Again, am NOT saying he DOES know what's best for them...he just believes he does. So basically...he's just a parent.

Um. I would just be happy if 50% of the 98% of the people in this world who are rude and unpleasant would attempt to be courteous and nice, whether male or female. Including in discussion groups.
