If by good you mean rife with grammatical and punctuational errors.

some would say the same of kerouac. this article was written as an entertainment piece, not as a pulitzer submission piece.

glad y'all are really setting your standards high for the sg news...personally I'm more concerned about picture and set quality on the site than I am about the damn culture pieces.

hah. you just compared this article to kerouac.

Did you really just compare an ill-written article to the writing of Kerouac?

Really?

Er. . .if you are not concerned with the writing quality, why bother comment?

A. I'm trying really hard but your articles leave a less than favorable impression.

B. I did that last night and it was a much more pleasurable experience than reading your articles.

what aren't you comprehending here? if you have that much difficulty following along with the flow of discussion on the lifestyle board, perhaps you need to take a step back and let the conversation continue without you.

Yes. Now that you have so succinctly pointed out what I am not comprehending. . .I feel that the weight of the world has been lifted from my sorry-ass shoulders.

And I also now see very clearly how the badly written article in question IS indeed similar to Kerouac's writing; or at the very least, I now uderstand why is should be perceived as such.

Thank you.

Kerouac sucks.

You're not 15 anymore and you're not going on any road or anywhere for that matter.

All of you, pick up a better book and pipe down.

That was not the point (and I don't think Kerouac sucks, but I do think Kerouac groupies suck).

The point was that Kerouac's writing was SUPPOSED to be as-published. This Sleepy person's articles read like rough drafts, no matter the topic, and a piece should not be published for a readership in rough draft form.

i don't really like Kerouac at all, but his worst stuff is better than this crappy article.

some celeb/gossip/whatever articles are funny and well-written. i love gossip stuff. this one was just littered with annoying errors and not amusing or interesting at all.

I think for everyone's sanity, they should stop expecting quality writing from any board on SG.

The problem is that the majority of articles (Totten, Bitch, DictionaryGirl, Brosa) are high-quality. Which is why I disagree with Saraah's statement that the newswire is like a blog. And which is why SleepyLady's first works seem so out-of-place. Which is why her entrance straight onto the Wire is weird to me.

I agree with you completely. What I will continue to do is lower my expectations. I have to.

For the record, I cannot understand why most of the writers haven't figured out that if they do a normal return in their word processor, it will code as a triple space in the SG article. Again, I have to just expect that the formatting, grammar, and spelling will be similar to what I'd expect in chat.

Otherwise, every article ends up being a thread about how shitty the article was/is and has nothing or little to do with the actual content. Like now. biggrin

Formus said: I mean, this Promises nonsense means absolutely nothing to anyone outside of Southern California. It's not relevant. So why is it here?

1) Please relax.
2) The SG newswire IS like a blog. They're not going to be delivering breaking news. Its a forum for talking about a lot of different types of news. There are politics articles on here. Read those if they are more your style. And if not, don't read them at all. Newswire content is FREE. Enjoy it (or don't) but stop trying to make it
3) Although you may not care about Promises, Star magazine has a circulation of almost 2 million people. I promise you that the majority of them do NOT, in fact, live in Southern California. You are way out of the pop culture loop, which is fine, enjoy yourself out there. But don't try to make it a geographic thing, that's just silly.

But i pay $4.00 a month!!11!!!

i expect a ticker tape to run across the bottom of my SG screen like i see on CNN, it has to cover the latest breaking news! So i can keep up to date about whats going on in the world whilst staring at bewbies!!

I expect three page articles written with great detail of who, what, why, where and when. I don't care about this "bandwith" excuse, make the articles a minimum of 3 pages! You can save bandwith by taking down some of these pictures of hot naked girls! Like anyone comes here for that anyway!!

I expect all the articles to be written on a 3rd grade reading level so i can understand them!!!! Subrosa and FearTheReaper need to stop using words with more than two syllables in them, i hate having to stop and sound the big words out!!!!

Most of all i expect all the writers to conform to what i like, and what i like only! They need to submit all articles to me! I shall read them and deem them appropriate or not for the site! If i don't like them they shouldn't be put on the Newswire. All articles should be written about Parma, Ohio, or the bordering cities! I don't care what happens in Akron, Ohio! That's over a ½ hour away!!

and dammit, if i submit a story, i don't care how poorly written it is, it should be put directly on the Newswire, because i wrote it!!

$4.00 dammit! $4.00!!!

wow. i am getting in on this thread late. i usually stay out of this stuff because... well.... i would typically rather jab a sharpened pencil into my temple than argue with bitter internet forum posters on the attack - but damn fucking layoff and just let the lady write her articile. if you don't like it then contribute something of your own. if you can't get your own stuff greenlighted then try something new.

ps - being a 12-stepper myself i thought the article was pretty interesting. i got clean going to meetings at churches and it didn't cost me anything (financially speaking). there is a lot of tough love in the rooms and not a lot of coddling. it seems to me that a place like Promises would be less effective with all the frills because i would think those would be a distraction to recovery.

Okay, I was wrong in my comment on this contributor's other "blog" writing about Reese Witherspoon. This particular op-ed is worse, and badly reflects the source (Star). Not to mention that it sounds like it is written as an interest piece by a California "Valley Girl". The only VG things missing are the frequent use of the word "like" two or three times in every sentence. It could be because I'm comparing her work to the likes of FearTheReaper, MAQI, Posh, Wil Wheaton, TheCoolerKing, the fun sarcastically funny stuff by Bitch Phd, and many of the others.

While sarcastic seems to be in of late, and I hate to actually criticize anyone's articles themselves (hey, this site's articles aren't meant to be taken THAT seriously - except for resumes...), the two articles I've stumbled over so far haven't given me the feeling that the articles are of general interest outside of the California state line. Both seem to be right out of that bathroom literature known as the National Enquirer or the other one also named something Star (like the Enquirer but had things like Bat Boy and aliens all of the time).

Sorry that I had to write these, SleepyLady. And for those who think I shouldn't apologize, I feel that I do. The main reason is that I never criticize articles themselves, usually points made by those who leave comments. frown
