Since the release of his debut album I Get Wet, with its infamous bloody-nosed cover, Andrew W.K. has constantly provoked the question, "Is he serious?" His music is so over the top with its propulsive, frenetic good-times that it would seem like a parody were the artist behind it anything less than sincere.

But Andrew W.K. is serious. The man behind such songs "It's Time To Party", "Party Til You Puke", and "Party Hard" is on a mission; a smiling, populist anomaly in a business where being happy...

Me too. Hands down the nicest, most sincere-sounding musician I've ever talked to.

I picked up the phone thinking "Yeah, Andrew WK, party party party" and hung up the phone thinking "I get it now." biggrin

I'll probably never really be a fan of his music but it's refreshing to see an artist working in that medium who isn't a complete and utter moron or corporate whore

i book a club in columbia sc. i also worked at the college radio station. anyway i booked andrew last september, really before he had blown up, at least around here. we had about 250 people come out for the show, and it was one of the best i'd ever seen. throughout the whole show all he talked about was how he was there to make us happy. after the show he thanked everyone, signed autographs, went to waffle house, did everything a normal person would do, and did everything a famous person should do, and was totally cool about everything. he honestly seems more amazed that people enjoy his music, and is more pleased by seeing other people enjoy his shows. since then i've talked to andrew at the Skate and Surf Fest in Jersey (his agent got me and 4 friends 3 day passes for free), where even though it was 8 months later, he still remembered the club, the town, the night that we fist met. i've also gotten to interview him during the Warped Tour, actually right before he played with the Dropkick Murphy's. alot of people think he's a joke and don't like his music, but it's not the music that matters but the character of the man. and besides, every big show we've had at my club since he played, we play the I Get Wet album at the end of the night and everyone gets on the bar and dances. probably one of the best times of my life.

Nice interview Keith.

When I heard him on Jo Whiley's show on Radio 1 in 2001 I was stunned by his intensity and sincerity more than anything else...so much so that I bought his releases on Bulb Records from eBay...
You can listen to his interview from that show here.

After seeing him live twice I can confirm that what he intended to do at shows is indeed the case...I sang along and bounced about to every track and so did most of the people in the venues.

I'm just pissed off that 'The Wolf' isn't out on vinyl...but I'll survive, barely... biggrin

To all the Andrew WK haters who simply don't get it I just want to say SanDimasHighSchoolfootballrules! tongue

Andrew W.K. is such a stooge...but in a good way.

Keith you rock for getting to talk to AWK and AWK rocks for being a dork.

I love this quote at the end:

"Sometimes you could just have something, and it doesn't need to mean anything, just like some of these songs. Yes, they have lyrics, they have things they're talking about, but look, if it feels good, and you enjoy it - that's as much as it needs to mean. We're just so curious, and we want to have as much knowledge about something as we can, but sometimes the beauty of something is just that it feels good - and that's all the knowledge we need about it. It's just something that we enjoy."

I saw him with Throwrag and Flogging Molly last December in LA. My friend had done a tour with Throwrag on guitar, so I got to hang out back stage. I was all set to say something smarmy to him, but he was actually a nice guy.

His music does suck tremendous spelunkable ass though.

I can't really understand anyone who doesn't identify with the pure exuberance that AWK exudes. Honestly, saying you hate AWK is like saying you hate the movie Starship Troopers or donuts, its like saying "Screw you fun, screw you joy, I want to live in a miserly little world where everything is ruled by logic and the human soul is quashed under the weight of rationality."

But then again, one of my favorite activities is putting on the old "Action Goggles" and going into the backyard to hack up things with a machete, so maybe I should be taken as a poor example to follow.

I've heard countless stories about the kind gestures Andrew WK's done for his fans. His music's completely fun & sincere and I always have to shake my ass when I hear any of his songs, neighboring music snobs be damned.

You should check out the message boards on his site sometime. His fans are beautiful. They're sitting there going "It's #61 on the charts! I hope it goes higher! Go Andrew!" Can you think of any other band out there who's fans are like that?
