Being the daughter of Hollywood royalty, Sofia Coppola could probably just lie back, collect a producer on Jeepers Creepers 2 and just collect a big fat paycheck. But in the spirit of filmmakers like Hal Hartley, Jim Jarmusch and even her husband Spike Jonze, Sofia writes and directs such highly personal projects like The Virgin Suicides and her latest film Lost in Translation.

Lost in Translation has a fantastic screenplay that is brought to new levels with the main characters played by Bill...

Excellent interview! I'm really looking forward to her new film; Virgin Suicides was fabulous. Here's a woman who could have very easily indeed coasted by on her family name, but instead takes her work very seriously and has become not just a "movie director," but a gifted, original filmmaker. Brava!

insightful interview, but if you haven't seen it already, check out the more extensive nytimes mag piece. hirschberg portrays a wider glimpse into ms. coppola's personality, motivation and style...

"She writes scripts that establish, sustain and then gently shift tone and atmosphere -- not Tolstoy but Chekhov. Her films are sophisticated and plangently romantic, and the emotions she stirs up linger. It is perhaps not too much to say that she is the most original and promising young female filmmaker in America." --nytimes mag.

...also, it would have been nice if this interview was accompanied with a picture of ms. coppola rather than scarlett johansson.

And good job on the interview, Dan. I like your film interviews. I never think of stuff like that when I'm watching a movie. I'm just kindof

"mm.. good movie."

sorry, i didn't mean to offend anyone. i did like your interview, though. it portrayed her in a more colloquial and friendly light than the nytimes mag did. it was more personal. kinda like her films, i guess. (probably an intentional rhetorical device on your part. bravo.)

My old school friend Lance is the cinematographer on that flick. He worked with Spike Jonez on his movies.
It's amazing the contacts you can make parking cars at Little City!

Yay Lance! You deserved to make it big! *sniff* We're all so proud...

DRE lays another great one on us.

At first I envied your job, then I envied your writing, now I'm beginning to envy your ideas.

Do the powers-that-be tell you when your interviews are going to be posted?

And based on comments thus far, I'd assume that DRE did the most recent Palahniuk interview and not Keith... is that right? Tell us, Dan - when do we get to stop slathering in anticipation and devour the finished product like starved wolverines?

If there is a movie to be released we usually try to get the interview up before the movie opens

thanks for the great compliment!!!

Yeah a 27 day shoot is very impressive. And I'm glad they didn't go video cause it looks crisp but soon DV will rule the world. I mean Deacons for Defense looked pretty damn good.
But again 27 days. Wow.

Memento was filmed in about 27 days too, but it is 10x better. I still like this movie. It lingers at points, but mainly because it seems to focus on the relationship more than any plot point.
