Happy World Vegetarian Awareness Month. Can you guess which of the above celebristuds is living a healthier, cruelty-free life? Let's see, could it be Outkast's hip-hop fabulous André 3000 (the artist formerly known as Dre)? Is there any chance in hell that it's the always hilarious and sometimes sloshed Danny DeVito? Or perhaps it's the intense and brooding Joaquin Phoenix?

If you guessed André.....you're right!

In fact, Benjamin is vegan, almost teetotal and sartorially eccentric; his variety of cool is the antithesis of the sportswear-clad, debauched excess traditionally associated with hip hop, and therefore excites much debate. All of which is enough to make you think Andre Benjamin's image must be hopelessly overhyped until you're confronted with it in the flesh, at which point it pretty much smacks you over the head.

Benjamin doesn't actually think he is cool. 'No. No. That's so funny. That is the biggest misconception. I am such a nervous man.' (His voice is soft and southern; he is from Atlanta, although he now lives in LA. He is never loud, he is courteous, gentle, still, self-contained. He laughs a lot.)

If you guessed Danny DeVito.....you're also right, kind of, although he may be falling off the wagon.

DeVito has teamed up with world renowned restaurateur David Manero and Michael Brauser to open his first restaurant, which will be aptly named DeVito South Beach, in Miami Beach, Florida. DeVito South Beach is slated to open to the public on June 18th, 2007, after a series of high profile private parties featuring a cast of A-list celebrities and Danny himself. Despite DeVito being a vegetarian, the restaurant will feature a contemporary Italian cuisine fused with characteristics of a traditional Italian chop house.

Can you still legitimately call yourself a vegetarian if you own a chop house? Um, methinks not.

Finally, if you guessed Joaquin Phoenix...you're right again, you clever thing.

When it comes to helping animals, Academy Award-nominated Walk the Line star Joaquin Phoenix always walks the walk and talks the talk. The vegan star speaks up for turkeys in a clever vegetarian ad for PETA that was directed by Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin. "Holidays can be murder on turkeys. Let’s make this one for the birds," declares Phoenix.

Other celebrity veg*ans include Elvis Costello, Dustin Hoffman, David Duchovny, and Alec Baldwin.

Want to join the club, or already in it? The North American Vegetarian Society (NAVS) is holding a contest, and you could win big by showing off your veg lifestyle.

NAVS is sponsoring a special World Vegetarian Day / Vegetarian Awareness Month Contest. Its easy to enter - just write and tell us about your activities. Entries will be judged on originality, creativity and effectiveness.

ONE PRIZE EACH WILL BE AWARDED TO:

An individual for the most outstanding activity &
A representative of a group, store or institution for implementing the cleverest outreach.

well, just because DeVito is a vegetarian doesn't mean he can't be his old corpulent self...cheese is technically vegetarian and lets face it, it's basically salted aged fat (particularly here in the states)

Mmm, meat. Delicious meat. Wonderful meat.

A vegan bird once landed on my shoulder and lent me this thought: apparently, human beings have been eating the wrong thing SINCE THE DAWN OF TIME. How did our ancestors ever survive eating such filthy mammoths all the time? Why those murderers!!!

You absolutely can.... There are MANY vegetarians out there who choose that lifestyle for health reasons. It is not exclusively something that is done for animal rights reasons.

Just as there are bar tenders that don't drink, and non-smokers that work at tobacco shops, there are plenty of vegetarians that sell and cook meat.

these men are obviously vegetarian because they simply don't like to eat meat,...maybe it gives them gas...they are certainly not by by political choice. They all wear leather, and all use the medium of celluloid to push their occupations..as far as I am aware leather comes from dead animals, and film being compromise of gelatin deratives also comes from dead animals..perhaps when they make clothing and film they use a humane and painless culling technique..or maybe they simply just wait for the beast to die of old age before they strip it of its meat, bone and other by products. I appreciate they try to watch where their consumer $ goes..perhaps even use their celeb status to make others aware of the meat industry, but in many various ways people can still hand over money to meat products and deratives without buying or eating meat itself. To be vegetarian for political reason is a very tough life style to take on indeed.

I like how discovery channel recently had a show where doctors linked eating meat to the growth of the brain. That extra protein is what made humans so smart and develop into what we are today. Also correlates why predators are often more cunning, inventive, and smarter, than herbivore prey.

But that's just Discovery channel.

a healthier, cruelty-free life

Oh puh-LEASE. You have to be fucking kidding me. What a self-righteous, stick-your-head-in-the-sand, arrogant piece of writing.

ALL of those celebrities live in the US, which means that their coffee and cigarettes, oil for their cars, their clothes, EVERYTHING THEY BUY is in some way linked to cruelty, unfair trade practices and general unhealthiness. Simply omitting meat from your diet does not guarantee that your life will be healthier, and it certainly doesn't guarantee that your life will be cruelty-free. That's completely ignorant.

Which is also why the only real vegans are millionaires, and can afford not only fifty dollars worth of pills every week, but the proper diversity of vegetation from around the globe to make up for the lack of protein in lettuce and fucking soy. Otherwise, if you don't have enough money, and you don't cheat on your diet, you're actually, literally making yourself stupid by being vegan. Which may explain the attitudes they all have.

Some people simply can't live a vegetarian lifestyle and be a healthy person at the same time.

But besides that, I also have the good fortune of not caring.

Beans, beans, they're good for your heart!
The more you eat the more you fart!

Not so good for social interactions, but beans are quite delicious. Especially Great Northerns.

Why do you find the ethical choices of others so threatening?

It's not actually all that difficult or expensive to live a healthy, animal-product-free lifestyle so long as one educates oneself about what one eats. The average Joe has a much poorer diet than most veg*ns. Certain individuals have a harder time functioning on that diet than others, but in most cases, it ain't no thing.

There is no really good reason not to eat meat, other than liking the taste too much to give it up. And that's valid. It's why I still eat the flesh from time to time. But I don't try to rationalize it.

I'm all for eating meat as part of proper nutrition, but for the record, soybeans are one of the few plant sources of complete protein.

Not to mention that most individuals only require something in the ballpark of 50 grams of protein a day, and the amount consumed by non-veg*ns is often much more than that. Excessive protein intake leads to calcium loss and possibly other problems.

Yeah, because legumes and whole grains are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO expensive and fancy!

Wait, they're not?

If you don't know how amino acids work (or where they come from) it's probably a good idea to not act like you know what you're talking about with regards to veganism. (In other words, "fifty dollars of pills a week" is bullshit, and completely unnecessary if you know what you're doing in a vegan diet.)

Of course, this is coming from a guy who makes absolutely sure he gets steak at least four times a year and would probably kill everybody he knows before he gave up cheese.

Now, as to the evolutionary process of animal protein supplementing the diet of hominids, for the better part of the last 5 million years, that meant cracking open the bones of animals that were already dead and eating marrow. I don't think that's where the people making that argument wanted said argument ending up. Additionally, it's simply just as valid to point out that healthy veganism is another development in human culture that has a lot of beneficial side effects, just like meat-hunting was for humans a quarter of a million years ago. Today, those side-effects of hunting are no longer germane for the vast majority of the population, even in so-called "underdeveloped" nations or aboriginal sub-populations. (A notable exception, for example, would be the Inuit.)

I just ate two veggie dogs wth soy cheese and they were delicious. Which brings me to the only issue I have with being a vegetarian, why are all the veg products made to mimic meat products? Veggie burger, veggie dogs, veggie ribs and veggie chic nuggets are all meat pretenders! What the hell? Can't we make a clean break and create some of our own food stuff?

Anyway, I am a bad vegetarian because I had no idea that there was even an awareness month. So, thanks for the heads up on that. Off to bed now, and in the morning I am going to have some egg beaters, a few soy sausage links, and a nice tall glass of chocolate Silk. Mmm mmm tasty.
