I think if there could be a video game movie that doesn't suck, Halo could be it.

I agree to playing campaign first then mulit-player 2nd..SOOO my buddies and I played and beat the legendary campaign in about 9 and a half hours!(co-op rocks!) Now we are getting our ends of sanity tested by getting our asses handed to us by a bunch of preteens! At our local game stop they held an 2v2 tourney of halo 2 and there was a kid no more than 10 years old that whipped ass! His mother was proud an taking pictures of this kids triumphant wins! 90% of the time when you finish a good battle where you are almost sweating and having to get another beer, you hear the sounds of laughter and ridicules coming from their smart ass mouths of how they pwned us! Lets face it the little shits are good! Props to them and props to their parents who have let microsoft babysit their kids for hours on end while they go do whatever it is they do! Moving on, I think a movie could be drawn up if they started from the very beginning, like the prequil to the first halo? That way fans can get a more involved prospective of how spartan117 got to be where he is at and then move on with a trilogy of some sort that could fit in the game aspects of it...Yes we geeks do exist thta will follow the story, like we all did for Harry Potter and will know when somethign was cut out or not! Hey we geeks keeps this rock called earth a spinning too...

Halo Movie project is delayed indefinitely? (Poss. due to Hollywood snoot at P.J for actually having the balls to sue NewLine over it's trans-dimensional non-linear differential accounting practises)

Also, Hans Zimmer's score for Pirates 2 is the best 'action movie' score of recent times.

/RANT

I'm always leery of a video game being applied to a movie. They might *seem* like a good mix, but there's a fundamental problem, the difference in narrative.

IN A GAME, the action has to be focused on the player at all times. Anything that doesn't directly feature or interact with the person holding the controller had better be short and majorly kick ass.

IN A MOVIE, the action has to move around a great deal. You can't create drama just by suddenly blowing up the earth - the audience has to KNOW that the villian has been striving to blow up the earth for the last hour, and that the hero missed hitting the button to stop it by half a second. Sorta thing.

So while Halo might seem like a very strong plotline when played from the First Person Perspective, it doesn't mean that it translates into Tolkein or Frank Miller or even Randal Wallace as an overall script.

Having said that, something like Predator takes the basic notion of what is more or less a single thread fight with almost no information from the villian's perspective. And - I'm a guy, yeah yeah - that was pretty darn good movie. =)

So, hmmm... it's cool that it *might* happen with PJ and Weta. It's probably not the worst game franchise you could attempt to make a movie with. But my ORLY owl sense is tingling.

Well, there's definitely a fundamental difference between game narrative and movie narrative. I don't think that's necessarily a problem, though. As long as the movie is approached as a way to tell game-related stories that couldn't be told well as a game, I think it'd work just fine. Quite a few games have more backstory and stuff going on than can be easily worked into the games proper, and Halo is clearly one of them - just look at the novels and comic.

Really? I mean, it's sole appeal is the fact that it's an awesome GAME. A game people want to play, not watch. I don't get how people/execs, etc. always seem to miss that fact. This is what it should be, its already reached its ultimate purpose, being a hit game. The same way numerous TV show pilots revolving around video games and watching people play them didn't work either, no one wants to hear someone talk about it, THEY wanna do it.

I know about 50 Halo fanatics and not one has ever commented to me about the awesome "story." The reason it's so similar to all those big budget movies is because it was constructed from those same generic, cliched parts. Parts that have been recycled in film for years... Just like GTA, DOOM, etc...

There's a reason there's never been a decent video game movie.

"Silent Hill" made a pretty good film.

The reason there's never been a whole slew of video game movies that were great is because they're mostly made to cash-in on popular franchises, regardless of whether or not it would make a good movie ("Super Mario Bros."?). The rest of the time, the whole idea/atmosphere that forms the basis of the game is ignored: the "Final Fantasy" movie had no "Final Fantasy" elements to it (which is weird, since it was made by the guy who created the series), but was instead a bare bones sci-fi film about humans versus aliens; "Alone in the Dark" has nothing to do with the games, etc.. This is just like how for years comic book movies sucked, because they were all either cashing in and just ignoring what made the books work.

The funniest part thing about the potential HALO movie is that FOX currently owns the rights to make it. Therefore, it would see a Blu-ray release. Who says PS3 doesn't have HALO? tongue

You cant forget resident evil...sure it really hasnt stuck with the game story but the fundalmentals are there to keep it tied to the game, and personally I think that all three of them kick ass.And as far as who would be master cheif, you would need to find a no name actor to fill this position. Why you may ask? Well mostly because master chief has never been "seen".

Silent Hill was a terrible movie, except for the maybe 10 minutes it spent in the dark version of the world.

I'm one of those people who hasn't been into the whole Halo madness thing.
Why?
I suck ass at Halo.
I tried playing the first one when it came out and I was horrible at it, I tried #2 and I was horrible and I'm sure #3 will be no exception.
I can't fucking control weapons or shoot in the direction of what I'm aiming for in that videogame for the life of me.

And for the record, I liked the Silent Hill movie.
(2 cents)

I hope you all know that there is a series of books about the backstory of the Halo Universe. It's got so much more story than the games give up. Oh, and they're liscenced by Bungie which means they actually have continuity. A film based on the first book in the series would be phenomenal.
Check the books out. There are four currently available and I heard there were supposed to be about five more.

Awe, c'mon! You didn't like Van Damme in Street Fighter? How about Bob Hoskins as Mario? And what of Double Dragon? Everybody loved Double Dragon!

Jk.

If I'm ever actually serious about that, rest assured, I'll cap myself.

I don't think it really matters who plays MC as long as as he's 7' tall and can do action sequences in a huge armor suit. They just need to get the same voice actor to do the voice overs. If they change his voice, I think it'll kill it.

Obviously you haven't been following the Halo movie news. This project has been in the works for two years and is already a complete disaster. Jackson was already attached and now is not. Several different drafts of scripts have been written. Studios backing off because of the cost, etc.

I am a Halo fan and the story line in the game is a fucking disaster. I don't even know what is going on "story wise" most of the time. The game is a success because of the style of play, not the story.

The way for Halo to succeed is to make it 3D animation AT LEAST on a par with FFVII Advent Children, and then go on to base the story on the books, not the games. The Halo games sell as mutliplayer experiences. C'mon, X-Box Live, and X-Box itself as a viable product, is the house that Halo built, so to speak. For a movie, though, they'll need the books.
