Despite the fact I totally love Liverpool FC, I never really thought that the actual city of Liverpool was much of a science "centre."
I think it depends on what science you're interested in; there are a few professors at Liverpool University that are pretty famous in the Evolutionary Biology circle, Geoff Parker and Greg Hurst regularly get Nature papers and the former pretty much defined optimal foraging theory... I think John Moores, being the less famous of the two universities, has to generate publicity to keep it in students. This kind of study is largely just a handy piece that journalists love to put in their science columns, I don't think it's indicative of the quality of science that the institution might produce.... <ahem, my gf's dad works at JM, so I'm protective about it I guess >
