Facebook has made a bad mistake. Apparently they've been deleting pictures of breastfeeding mamas and babies, and in some cases even deleting the accounts of said mamas. This, apparently, because they (1) consider breasts obscene, and (2) can't differentiate between a titty shot and a picture of someone feeding a baby.

"Photos containing an exposed breast do violate our Terms and are removed," she said.

It's not clear what constitutes an "exposed breast", which has the lactivists baffled.

Facebook did not respond to emails requesting further clarification but several group members have reported that their images were removed despite the fact they contained no nipple.

As anyone who's ever had a baby knows, you Do Not Fuck With Breastfeeding Mamas, who are one of the most easily organized groups on the internet. After all, websurfing is one of the few things you can do easily while nursing a baby. And mamas who breastfeed are pretty damn militant (rightly so), since it takes a certain amount of chutzpah just to overcome the "omg, titties!" thing and decide to nurse in the first place.

I predict that Facebook's going to change their mind about this policy within a week. So if you're on Facebook and agree that they should learn the difference between porn and breastfeeding, you'd better hurry up and join the Hey, Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene! group; since the original article linked at the top of this story appeared three days ago, the group's gotten almost 10,000 members, who've posted over 600 breastfeeding photos.

Bitch_PhD breastfed her kid for two and a half years.

I have no kids. So I have never breastfed a baby. I plan on doing so whenever I am lucky enough to have them. But WHY (and i am legitimately asking this question) would you put pictures of your baby breastfeeding on your Facebook account? Myspace, oh definitely. But Facebook?

I guess this is just a beauty I cannot appreciate until I go through it myself. Oh well.

oh and to edit I am not saying it isn't a beautiful thing at all. Don't want to be attacked by the Breastfeeding Mamas. Just don't know why you feel the need to share that moment with the world.

I joined the group, and I agree with the message. But the term "lactivist" is really, really stupid.

Okay, agreed, but I think mamas should definitely still have the right to!

I remember I went to YouTube not too long ago, a month or so, and in the "What People Are Watching" area there was clearly a giant nipple. Now, I was mighty perplexed by this, because it was YouTube, and they don't do nipples. So, being the curious sort, I clicked on it. Turns out it was some sort of breastfeeding documentary. The doc was only slightly interesting as I'm a guy and find babies to be completely and totally creapy. But the comments were WAY entertaining. There are some scary people out there. That has nothing to do with this story really. I just had too much coffee today.

I get the whole thing about posting pics on Facebook, well tthat site anyway.
WHO THE FUCK ARE those people on facebook to think they can judge aesthetics-PERIOD. We've gotten so far off from who we are and what our nature is that they feel like it must be deleted to to 'Obscene' Nature!?! good GOD folks!

While I think it absolutely silly to chuck people off a social networking site for having pictures of them being responsible parents I'm wondering why people have pictures of them breast feeding in the first place? Surely you could have found a more adorable image of your snuggly baby than the one your husband or wacky friend snapped of you while you we have brunch at church?

Also, if an exposed nipple is considered obscene I'd like to ask that facebook remove the pictures of 15 year olds trying to look tough with their shirts off in front of their dad's boat sucking their baby fat in.

I have kids. I breastfed all of them. I breastfed them until age 3. I breastfed them when they and I felt like it, regardless of where we were. Like other breastfeeding mothers I encountered a breadth of responses and never took any shit.

Despite putting some pretty crazy pics in the INTAnet, and breastfeeding when and where-ever, I agree with superkrzyamos that I would not jump to post it on some pseudo preppyass internet group site..

but i sure as F*ck defend to death their right to do so wink

Hey, breastfeeding is natural.

So is taking a shit.

Doesn't mean I want to SEE someone doing either in public, thankyouverymuch.

I staunchly support every woman's right to expose one or both of her breasts in my presence whenever and however she sees fit.

Of course you should have the right to post pictures of your kids breast feeding, but that doesn't make it a good idea.

eh, i don't get why they'd really want to post breastfeeding pics either, but i don't have kids so i fully admit "not getting it."

the point is that breastfeeding is natural, it's not sexual and women should be able to post these pictures if they want.

If you want to breast feed go ahead, if you want to take pictures do it... but when you put them on facebook... common... no1 wants to see that. facebook is for networking you put pictures of your face, friends, parties etc... but when it gets to the point that people put pics like that up something needs to be changed... i say make facebook only available for college/uni students again and keep the breast feeding out of it!!

people shouldn't breastfeed in public and should instead wait to let their babies EAT when they are alone in a dark corner and can expose their shameful breasts? good Christ. you'd rather have babies screaming on the bus and wherever else than let them eat in peace?

breastmilk is food for babies. if you're grossed out by breastfeeding, you should be grossed out by watching full-grown humans eat.

anyway, Facebook is a bunch of Big Brotherish crap and I can't believe people are still getting outraged by the shit it gets away with. worse, I can't believe people still willingly sign up to be part of it.

I think it's pretty laughable to kick people off for showing something natural and not obscene and yet at the same time drag their heals cleaning up groups that promote hate.

some college students are mothers.

and guzzling breastmilk is more reprehensible than guzzling booze?

I am at a loss.

Somehow in my post i forgot to note that i was surprised that people (ok women) were posting these pics.

but I have to say, when your breasts become huge and you can produce milk, they don't always seem to be your breast, so much as large & alien squirting objects

so maybe there's this disconnect...

Some states have laws permitting women to be topless for this purpose.. it really is not a salacious event.

well, what i meant was there are some pictures i am cool with people seeing and some i'm not and at this point i would personally put "my boobs" in the "not cool" category. but i can see how moms might feel otherwise.

the fact is face book own the site...they can or unmake rules as much as they like. They can ban pics of red clothes...they can ban pics of ppl with brown hair...if you wanna show yourself breastfeeding bubs to a friend, then just email it. I have read similiar cases of where sites banned breastfeeding pics for the reason that they found the pics were getting large amount of hits each day. They feared the pics in question were perhaps being used by some ppl for unmoral reasons without the owner of the pics consent...it made sense to me...in the uk you can't take your cell phone into a public pool..for the reason that you cant use a phone under water, but also they found a certain element of strangers were picing young children in their bathers or snapping infants who had been left to run undressed...they banned to keep the sick element down to a minimum..again made sense...if face book for whatever reason wants to ban breastfeeding...it is their site,..they can do what they want...if you don't like,..go create your own version of similiar site...seems so simple...don't like the rules...don't go there.
