I was just wondering if anyone's read anything fairly new that's worth checking out. I'm game for anything besides romance novels. I like a good mix of everything else. Last one I read was Sex, Drugs, & Cocoa Puffs. It's a little older, but pretty entertaining nonetheless. Any recommendations?

Haruki Murkami, who is always worth reading, has a new book After Dark out now, which I just picked up.

Of course, if you haven't read any Murakami at all before, I would recommend starting with A Wild Sheep Chase or Wind-Up Bird Chronicle.

I just read Cormack MacCarthy's 'The Road.' A sparse narrative about a father and son trying to survive after the end of the world. It's beautiful and desolate.

if you liked Sex, Drugs, & Cocoa Puffs, then you would like any of Klosterman's other books. Fargo Rock City is fantastic, i'd start there.

"Motherless Brooklyn" by Jonathan Lethem is wonderful.

Awesome! Thanks everyone!

Actually, I've read all 4 of Klosterman's books. I liked all of them! I just read Chuck Palahniuk's latest one too called "Rant". I dig all of his stuff too.

I think my favorite is still Hardboiled Wonderland/End of the World, and was the first one by Murkami I read.

warrenellis's first novel was recently released: Crooked Little Vein. The unluckiest private detective in the world is hired by the heroin addict White House Chief of Staff to find the secret constitution of the United States, which takes him through things that....

Well, it's the book with Godzilla bukkake in it.

Also quite enjoying Dan Simmons' latest, The Terror, a horror novel of arctic exploration during the 1840s.

Wow! You guys are gonna keep me busy! I've got Flight, Crooked Little Vein, and Wind-up Bird Chronicle all on hold for me at the library. I'll start there then move to the others. I'll let you all know what I think. Thanks again!

Hooray! Tell me what you think of Flight. Alexie is one of my very favorite writers.

William Gibson's Spook Country is a good read, it's not his best work but it's a good read.

If you're looking for something a bit more factual then try The Fall of Yugoslavia by Misha Glenny and learn how Europe, the US and Russia utterly fucked the whole situation up

It's Fight Club, WITH CARS!

Sad to say, he hasn't written one I've truly loved since Choke.

Yes! Awesome book. His books "Choke" and " Stranger Than Fiction: True Stories" were great reads too. They're actually in post-production on the novie version of "Choke" too. Should be interesting...

Crooked River Burning, by Mark Winegardner.
A very good book in its own right, and as a native Clevelander you should get an added kick out of it.
