The first concert I ever attended was Motley Crue at the Orange County Fairgrounds in upstate New York. They were playing with Tesla, and even at that age I knew that they sorta of sucked.

Somewhere between the girlie-fied, hippie rock of Tesla and the thrash-tastic glam of the Crue, I lost my sneaker. All I recall is a wall of mulleted-humanity crashing down on top of me as I was thrust towards the stage. A moment of falling, a moment of panic, and then the sweet relief of getting yanked up and over to safety by a burly security guard. (C'mon, I was like 11. I'd do better now...maybe.)

When I looked down my sneaker was gone. Not surprisingly, my parents cut back on allowing me to got to out of state concerts with people older than me, who they met once for three minutes.

Nikki Sixx is probably my favorite Motley Crue member. Less-douchey than Tommy Lee, less-hard to look directly at than Mick Mars and less-Vince Neil than, well, Vince Neil...

While Lee and Neil have spent the past few years in reality TV hell, and Mick Mars has been doing whatever it is that Mick Mars does, it appears Sixx has been busy writing a new book about his heroin days called appropriately enough The Heroin Diaries. No word on whether it comes complete with unicorns and needles scribbled on the margins. "Dear Diary- I think Katy likes me! LOL. Also, I just injected two ounces of black tar into an eyeball vein I'd never before noticed... OMG! Wish me luck!"

I think the key here is whether or not the book glamorizes heroin and the excesses of rockstardom. Obviously, at some point he has to wake up and decide he's against it. I know this because he is not currently dead. But, when, and for how long, is he pro-heroin?

My hope is that he comes to the realization that heroin is bad... on the very last page of the book. Last paragraph even. Better yet, put it on the back cover. Put an ellipsis on the last page, flip over and read: "Then I got clean. The end."

Those of you in the DC area might also want to check this out:

Motley Crue founding member Nikki Sixx whose brutally honest upcoming book The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star (due September 18th from MTV Pocket Books/Simon & Schuster) chronicles his battles with drug addiction and his road to recovery, will be a featured speaker at the 18th Annual National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month luncheon on Capitol Hill, September 6th. He is the first rock star to speak at this event.

NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals invited Sixx to share his story at this national forum alongside Terry Cline, Ph.D, Administrator, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and H. Westley Clark, MD, JD, MPH, Director, SAMHSA Center for Substance Abuse Treatment.

Wow. Yeah, follow that, Doc! I hope they let him close. Also, I hope his stories follow the same format I layed out for the book. If he speaks for an hour, 59 minutes better be a vicarious thrill-ride through heroin-soaked ecstasy... Then, a one minute wrap-up on the possible downside.

Although, I think the fact that Nikki Sixx gave it up, probably means no one this side of Keith Richards should be doing it. That definitely includes me... the guy who got high once and tried to punch out a lamp.

TheCoolerKing still enjoys the occasional hearing of "Shout at the Devil" on the weekends

Awwwwwww, c'mon, Motley Crue ROCKED. . .in that way that lots of 80's hairmetalglamdrugletsfuck bands did! And they did it first. . .er, well, second? third? I mean, there was that whole Hanoi Rocks thing; then that OTHER (even worse) Hanoi Rocks thing.

Well. I actually met Mr. Sixx upon a time ago, just walking on Sunset Blvd. Oddly enough I ran into him again later that night at The Rainbow, barely 5 hours later. . .and he actually remembered meeting me. Then someone socked somene else, someone peed IN THE TRASH CAN (ewwwwwww) and, well. . .now here I am. Whatever that means.

Anyway. The first time *I* saw Motley Crue was in a garage in, Glendora I believe. I don't think it was fame that fucked those boys up. I think they were fucked in general.

Woo.

How many typos are there here?

But will it be as awesome as Nicole Richie's heartfelt coming of age story. In which SHE, i mean...her character plays with sex and drugs and parties?

yeah, everything i've seen, heard or read pretty much makes me think nikki is the most level of the crue. plus, as a non-vocalist songwriter, i appreciate how he pretty much wrote every good crue song.

if the new book is anything as good of a read as the dirt was, i'll look forward to it.

fortunately, i know already that heroin is bad news, so whether it's pro or con, i'll enjoy it.

More abou the beer? The whiskey? The need to bathe? The party? The sex?

It's sad how one set of hormones can COMPLETELY override every freaking braincell in your head. Musicians, rockers, heavy metal boys in glam getup = DROOOOOL.

Crue was my first concert too. It was the Dr. Feelgood tour, and during Tommy Lee's drum solo in some contraption suspended over the crowd, he bungeed off and landed on his head splitting it open. We only got tot see about 5 songs and had to go home.

I was never a big Crue fan, but one of the best concert experiences I ever had was seeing the Crue with, of all the strange but brilliant opening band choices, the SCORPIONS. I hate to admit that we had arrived at the show with a condescending-ironic-hipster-mentality, making fun of the whole spectacle, but by the end of the night we were totally converted and I still can't believe how great that show was, not to mention I'm still ashamed that I ever doubted the boys.

Heroin IS bad, yeah, I too know from raw personal experience, but I kind agree with "CoolerKing." Nobody should glamorize it of course, but there's nothing worse than a drug-tale told from the perspective of a self-righteous "born-again" junkie. It's like when some critics accused Irvine Welsh (and later on, director Danny Boyle) of "glamorizing" heroin addiction in Trainspotting. Even the film version didn't make dope addiction look like a bed of roses, and you'd have to have your head far, FAR up your ass to think Welsh was trying to make it sound cool. The best true-life addiction stories are the ones where the narrator strives to be honest about ALL the aspects of addiction, the low low points AND, let's face it, the points where it was fun as hell to get high and nothing in this world was gonna make you feel guilty about it.

I say let Sixx tell his side of the story. I bet he'll surprise us all, and it's probably gonna be one hell of a read. But what do I know? I'm high right now.....

Are you kidding? Have you heard of my namesake?

Anyway, the Crue really did suck. We all once liked a band that sucked, admit it. I loved Blue Oyster Cult. Now I can't barely listen to their stupid and insipid lyrics. I still do like their music though.

Whenever I hear about crystal meth, I always think of river bottom trash hanging out in tarpaper shacks, only venturing into town for supplies. Like sudafed and dinty moore beef stew.

I lost BOTH of my shoes and got knocked unconscious at a Goo Goo Dolls concert in high school. HA!

At first I believed that only Vince Neil was a total asshole. Killing someone (and paralyzing another person, let's not forget it) while DUI, never apologizing about it, then only spending 14 days for it in jail (less time than fucking Paris Hilton did!) should already be enough for anybody to dislike the guy.

Not content with that, Motley Cunt issue years later a best of called "Music to crash your car to" (I'm sure the parents, friends and family of the victims are really happy about the total contempt/disrespect for human life that this shows) and Nikki Sixx, while playing in Helsinki recently, "dedicates" a song to Andy McCoy saying "it's in the past man, let's move on"... Yeah, I'm sure Nikki Sixx would have moved easily on if Tommy Lee had been the dead man and if MC would have split because of the tragedy, robbing him of incoming worldwide fame in the process.

I'm glad the excerpts were mentioned; and here's another link....
Also it may have been nice to mention that 25% of the profits of the book are going to Sixx's own charity, Running Wild in the Night, an arts and music program for runaways.

I went on the 2000 Maimum Rock tour with Motley, Megadeth and Anthrax, and I have nothing but wonderful things to say about the Crue as people. They treated me like family the whole tour, even though I was just a fan.
