If anything good comes about this sentence, it is he won't get out early for good behavior. Unless things have changed, there is no early parole in the federal system.

Thought highly unlikely, I'm still crossing my fingers for a 5 year sentence.

I really don't see the difference between dog fights and bullfighting. Furthermore, I don't see much of a problem with either one. Most Americans would find things like bullfights and cock fights repulsive, but both of these practices are considered legitimate entertainment (and even an art form to some extent) in other countries. Likewise, dog fights are considered a legitimate form of entertainment within specific subcultures in the U.S. (stereotypically, but not necessarily, young black and Hispanic males). My personal belief is that any dog I happen to purchase is my property, and I should be able to do with it what I wish (no, I've never owned a dog and never will, so don't worry). Yes, I think it's bizarre and inhumane to drown, strangle, or otherwise kill a domestic animal, but I don't think people that torture animals in such a way should get jail time for it. I understand that it's a crime, but to me it seems ludicrous that Vick could spend several years in jail for killing dogs. If it's truly against "public policy" to kill domestic animals (which I find debatable), a heavy fine would be sufficient to accomplish governmental objectives. On a side note, it also seems rather silly that I could torture and kill a dog if it was my sincere religious belief, but I can't do the same thing for sport- what's the difference??? All in all, I feel like Vick is getting railroaded here... they're just dogs, people!

I also believe that his jail sentence should be longer than a frickin year.
Murder a human and you get 20 to life...
murder a slew of dogs and you get free publicity, a year in jail (3-6 months on good behavior) and a fine?

Yeah, I know, we gauge dog and human lives as different in importance...but still.

I try to point this out to people who use this case as proof that "we treat animals better than people in our society". Yeah, it totally shows.

murder a human and get 20- too life?...what the hell are you reading?..i u.s the average murder is parolled after 8 years for murder...

Parole after 8 years does mean a sentence of 20, no? It's kind of beside the point anyway. Even if a person spends 8 years in jail for killing another human being, I'll be stunned if Vick even gets 2. For killing eight dogs. And torturing dozens more.

So as long as nobody trucks out the "he's being treated worse than if he killed a person" line, we're cool.

Well, it all depends on the guilt level. Manslaughter, murder one or murder two.

The Falcons can't just up and cut him. If they did, his entire signing bonus that they haven't paid would count against this years salary cap, and the club would take a huge hit against the Salary cap that they simply couldn't afford.

Cutting VIck now without the help of the league would put the Falcons in a gigantic salary cap problem for a few years.
Because of the NFL salary cap, its just as easy as simply cutting a guy with a 130million$ contract.

Falcons ownership has pretty much admitted this is the case, without really admitting it's the case.Once they've managed to get their signing bonus money back, and probably after Vick's sentencing on the 10th of December, the team's going to cut him loose shortly thereafter.

Though it's been said here before and I fully agree with it: after Vick does his time, a desperate, shitty team will take a chance on him. Just imagine: Michael Vick, a man looking to turn his life around, joins [random NFL team], looking to turn their franchise around! The feel good story of the 2010 season! puke

I'm not for dog fighting, but really, what's the difference between what he did and the way factory farms kill cows or chickens? He hung them and drowned them.

Are you really feigning ignorance to the obvious fact that, historically, dogs have been seen as domesticated pets and cows and chickens have been seen as food?

Not to mention, animals raised for food are (I believe) killed somewhat humanely - versus dog fighting where the dogs sustain combat injuries which often result in death.

Not to mention the ongoing mistreatment and neglect of the dogs.

there is NOTHING humane about the way that cows, chickens, pigs, and turkeys (and any others i may have forgotten) are mass produced for slaughter. they're raised in conditions reminiscent of slave ships and concentration camps, and then put onto conveyor belts where they're ripped to pieces while some of them are still alive. i'm not even going to go into the drastic reduction of sea life from over-fishing. it's kind of screwy to me that people say they love animals, yet continue to support a system that, in a horrific manner, turns them into food. you all should really think about that before you sit down to your next meal of carcass!
