My mom is on her way to becoming a crazy cat lady. I think her problem is she feels bad for strays and takes them in. Right now she had eight, but I wouldn't be surprised if she got more in the future.
Growing up, we always had at least eight cats in our little house on a farm. They were very well taken care of, but 8 was way too many cats. Especially when one of them would get fleas...
Later I had three cats and that seemed like the perfect number.

my neighbor is somewhat of a cat lady
She lives alone and in three years I've never seen her with another person.
She has eight or nine cats that she lets out of her apartment every night at 3AM to wander around.
what's sad is that I'm consistently up every night to watch this.

Yeah, it's called "Animal Hoarding," and it's a clinical disorder. It's a compulsive thing, the people can't help it and generally need to see someone to try and get help. I see it on Animal Planet all the time.
When I can't sleep at night.
theres also this disease that is connected to cat litter boxes (or something) that affects men and womens brain chemistry... it makes women more nurturing and men more paranoid.
Toxoplasmosis maybe? thats what i got when i googled litter box disease.
Are you serious? I'm gonna have to look into that.
That's going to be me someday. I am going to be a crazy old cat lady and then when I die, cold and alone, my cats will eat me and it will be weeks before anyone finds my decomposing and half eaten corpse, led by the horrible smell leaking into the hallway from my tiny apartment. Also my windows will be covered in tin foil.
I guess it depends on the number of people taking care of the cats, and perhaps the amount of space you have. I think 3-4 is a good max number. Especially if it's just one or two people who are there to give attention and care. But when you have one person caring for upwards of ten (let alone close to 100), I think that's a bit ridiculous. But hey, better that they at least have a home I guess. Although, if they're stuffed into a small space with tons of other cats, that's kinda fucked up.
But yeah, don't be the crazy cat lady. They're kinda sad.
