Actually, it probably happens less per capita than in the same number of people in the average American town.
I would hope it would be almost non-existent in the military. I also don't expect cops to rape people either - although I'm sure it happens.
Well, the sad part is, you are correct.
I hate to say it, but in some cases the military brings this on itself. Just like the police in some city have lowered their standards, the military has too.
Normally, I am as apolitical as you can get, since I prefer not to try and drag work and R/L together. But the current situation with military recruiting (based on combat tours, etc) has caused the military to lowers its standards. And the sad part is, there are people with "issues" that are getting into the military and handling weapons. I know, I work with some of them.
But it has been said by another in this thread, we are people too. Some people can handle stress and lax of sexual contact better than others. The fact remains that if you put men and women together, there is going to be the odd man out who is deficient and attacks women for whatever reason.
Getting back to the OP, I think this should be brought to the attention of the national media. But only after the national media prints one good story about our troops for every bad story that they elect to publish/bring to light. I know most of the good stuff that we are doing over here isn't "newsworthy", but tough shit.........tell the WHOLE story, not just the bad sides of it.

A military guy I was talking to at work had this to say about women in the military, and I can't really argue with his reasoning:
'I don't think women should be in the military. Not because they can't do the job, but because there are more or less two kinds of guys out there. There are the ones that have the protect-the-woman ideal engrained in their head, and will risk their lives and others to protect a woman, even though she has the exact same job to do. Then there are the kind of guys who will... well, you know. Make use of a woman's body.'
I thought it was nice of him not to say 'rape and beat' but that's pretty much what he was getting at. Stories like this just drive his point home.
It seems to happen consisitantly in the military. I had a friend that got raped in Korea, it is just something that you can't fathom why people can do that to others, nevermind their own in arms...
