Remember when drinking and driving was legal? Neither do I, but someday we might be able to say that we actually do remember when texting and driving was legal. It's gotten to the point where enough lives have been lost to idiots texting behind the wheel (like this genius in Kentucky, this genius from Colorado, and this genius from Tennessee) that 9 out of 10 Americans say texting while driving should be banned.

Ninety-one percent of Americans believe sending text messages while driving is as dangerous as driving after having a couple of drinks, but 57 percent admit to doing it, a poll released Tuesday said.

Interesting overlap, there. Almost all Americans think it's a really really bad idea, but over half do it. Sounds kind of like an addiction.

The Harris Interactive survey commissioned by mobile messaging service Pinger Inc. found 89 percent of respondents believe texting while driving is dangerous and should be outlawed.

This past May, Washington State passed the first ban in the United States on texting while driving, and it's looking like other states including New York, California, and Florida are considering similar legislation.

I really don't get texting while driving. Nothing you can say over a text can be that fucking important.

People need to learn to put their damn cell phones down once in awhile. Another one of my pet peeves (though obviously it isn't as dangerous and downright stupid as driving while texting) is people who refuse to put their cell phones down while they are being waited on. For example, while going through the check-out line at the grocery store or while ordering food somewhere. It's rude to the staff, basically treating them as if they don't even deserve the respect of one minute of undivided attention. I love it when I go to places and see signs indicating that people who can't get off their cell phones to buy a couple of groceries will not be served until they can use manners.

5 girls died in Fairport, NY this summer right after graduating from High School. It is believed that the driver may very well have been texting while driving. So I guess, yeah, don't do it. Or you're a fucking moron.

Don't forget Illinois.

I ride a bike. For people who talk on the phone or text(!!!) while driving: let's get one thing straight, you're endangering my life. I see the way you fuckers drive, like a fucking brain-dead 2-year old playing with a toy dashboard. You think you can pull it off; you can't. I can spot you idiots three blocks away.

If you pointed a gun at me, I'd feel safer. But if you're driving a car, and you don't see me because you're on the phone (!?!?!? seriously, wtf ?!!?!), I also feel totally justified in grabbing that phone out of your hands, throwing it across the street, and giving you a close up view of my U-lock. Shut the fuck up and pay attention. Ass.

*Perhaps the most threatening thing I've ever said on SG, but people on phones drive like fucking idiots every day, and I'm sick of it.*

Ugh, I heard about this when it happened in Colorado...I seriously don't get it...talking on the phone while driving is bad enough, but wouldn't you rather use a few minutes air time to ask for directions than get in a fatal car accident? nevermind the fact that people's manners are falling to pieces because of cell phones...what do you say at the funeral about someone who died from texting? 'sry dude, u wr gr8t'?

Yes, and that's just as stupid. But I feel a little less threatened by a 150lb idiot, on a 20-30 pound bike, going 12 mph than I do with some fucktard in a 2-3 ton SUV at 45 mph.

or those listening to headphones while biking and swerving all over your side of the road because you can't hear fucking traffic coming behind you? UGH!!

Okay the guy in Kentucky though, not that I'm arguing on his side or anything, and yes I'm guilty of texting while driving but WHAT in the world was a TWO YEAR OLD doing in the fucking street at 10PM anyway??? Again I'm not blaming anyone but the guy driving while texting but still why is there a two year old in the street or NEAR the street at 10pm?? THAT pisses me off more than anything.

Something similar should be made with operating an iPod while driving. I let the playlist run and ocasionally change songs at the red light, but I think the guy who tries to pick one song out of the list at the wheel is just as threatening if not more than the one texting his friend to ask "what's up".

As far as I'm concerned, the sub-fucks who are actually doing this, no great loss. (They're usually the same morons who think that Maroon5 play "alternative" music and are really jazzed about the 3.5 mpg their hummers are getting.) It's the innocent bystanders I'll shed a tear for. People really are fucking idiots...

Does that mean listening to the radio, or drinking some water if you are thirsty? sounds pretty harsh, and driving means different things to different people, you would have to tighten up the definition of driving, and then give a list of acceptable driving activities, and unacceptable driving activities. to say ban anything that is not driving while driving is pretty ambiguous.

Why does anyone think that trying to make messages with your thumb on a phone with itty bitty numbers whilst driving would be a good idea?

Because people are disgustingly self centered and believe that every thing about them is a life or death matter. What if your boyfriend has to wait fifteen minutes to find out how your day was? THE WORLD COULD END!
