I cried when I looked at Strunk and White AND Garner and discovered that it is now acceptable to use apostrophes in pluralizations and years. No, it's not! It's like when the O.E.D. gave "judgement" the stamp of approval. Don't pander to idiots!

They gave judgement the stamp of approval because it's been in use at least as long as judgment. The OED doesn't pander, they just find new sources. And while I agree that it's dumb to accept apostrophes where they clearly shouldn't be, using them in electronically set type (e.g. computer screens) makes it much easier to read. In this case, I really think it was them giving way to technology, not idiocy.
