But you're not entitled to make a living by being wrong.

Some pharmacists in Washington State are, of course, suing the state for passing a law requiring them to hand out Plan B.

Money quote:

An amended legal complaint filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Seattle states that Kevin Stormans, who co-owns Ralph's, "believes that Scripture and science support the conclusion that life begins with fertilization. Stormans' religious beliefs prevent him from selling a drug that intentionally terminates innocent life," reports The Olympian newspaper.

IF the man knew jack shit about pharmacy, he'd realize that Plan B doesn't terminate life, innocent or not. If his religious "beliefs" prevent him from selling birth control then he can--as people of faith have always done--make an actual sacrifice for his beliefs, and find another job.

Bitch_PhD proposes a kind of litmus test: any faith that requires *other people* to sacrifice, rather than yourself, ain't worth shit.

Tsk tsk tsk, it's not him who has to make a sacrifice for his beliefs. It's the rest of us.

Duh.

whatever

I guess the pharmacist should read Plan B's fuckin' website, aye?

Plan B® is not RU-486 (the abortion pill); it will not work if you are already pregnant.

This made me think of the Penny Arcade comic about this issue, but I can't find it in their archive. It compared pharmacists whining about actually doing their jobs to someone who takes on a job eating bees and then complains when he gets stung.

I heart you for finding that. I kept trying but I guess I couldn't think of the right search terms. It's one of my favorite Penny Arcades ever.

hmmm... you know it seems to me people have become way to polarized on the issue of religion. the religion issue is still very paramount in the spirit, heart and mind of the people, and it is really sad. you can't make someone be what you want them to be. Uber conservative Christians are going to either be super loving, or super condeming of your lifestyle, and uber liberal activist are going to be the same way with their "come as you are, or fuck you for judging us" mind set. i see no clear way to resolve this issue.

Pharmacist should know that the places they work in offer a variety of pills. powders, contraceptives, etc, all based upon consumer demand and need. this is known. perhaps they shouldn't sale anything because it is all "drugs" after all. you have to pick your battles. Obviously this is easier said than done. The Pharmacies should be more proactive in keeping their employees happy by having someone who will adminester any drug to any client with an approved doctors prescription paired with a more conservative pharmacist who won't give out certain drugs. That's what i do in my line of work if i don't like something someone says or does, i either refuse them service, or pass them along to someone who will work with them. again. it all comes down to what you believe, and you can say it forces others to sacrifice, but you have to be true to yourself first and foremost. if you feel strongly about not adminestering a drug kudos to you, don't do it. whatever, I'm contradicting myself anyway. Good job, I occasioanlly like your articles Bitch_PhD even if very seldom.

I've always wondered if a pharmacist would stop distributing other drugs based on moral issues. Like say someone needed medication for HIV, would they refuse on the gorunds that HIV is spread by immoral means? If a person needed Medication for lung cancer would they object because they object to smoking?

and furthermore...WHY DO THEY KEEP ON SAYING IT"S AN ABORTION PILL!? It's their job to be INFORMED as pharmacists on what drugs do what, isn't it?!

Another thing is that if you're going to let your religious beliefs dictate how you conduct business then you ought to be more forthright about it and stick a fish on the door or something.

I'm pretty sure the word you're looking for there is "pedophile", not "Christian".

Back to the article, good God. Get a new job if it's so terrible. Or bugger off to one of those backward states where you belong.

When I was a kid, I so looked forward to the future. I looked forward to all the advances in scientific, medical and social issues. I used to picture a world where everyone could get along, if not love each other, and expand our minds with books and culture.

As more time passes, reading articles like this just cement the fact that not only are we not moving forward, we're falling backwards into all the old misconceptions and idiocies.

Life starts at conception and ends at birth...otherwise these "Christians" would support health care for children, education, the environment, be against death penalty and war. Of course for some life begins the moment sperm is created, but it still ends at birth.

George Carlin once commented about this dichotomy:
"These conservatives are really something, aren't they? They are all in favor of the unborn, they will do anything for the unborn, but once you're born, you're on your own! Pro-life conservatives are obsessed with the fetus from conception to nine months. After that they don't want to know about you, they don't want to hear from you . . . no neo-natal care, no day care, no head start, no school lunch, no food stamps, no welfare, no nothing! If you're pre-born, you're fine. If you're pre-school, you're fucked.
