On July 25 a Los Angeles-based California Patient's Group (CPG) -- a medical marijuana dispensary -- was raided by the DEA. Without warning, DEA agents stormed into the building using full force, shattering the CPG's front door. Everyone inside, including patients, was held inside for hours at gunpoint. Just down the street, as soon as the staff at SGHQ heard what was going on, we decided to join in and protest this raid. The police force had sent over 25 units to guard our dispensary. The cops should have been out there protecting the innocent , not abusing them. Although we protested peacefully, at least two people were hit with police clubs and arrested. The state of California passed Proposition 215 in 1996, giving its citizens the right to use medical marijuana, yet once again it has been denied us. I met a man at the protest that had bone marrow cancer who now has to suffer until he can get more medication. Below are some of the photographs Andrew Yoon snapped of the chaos. For more photos, check out his Flickr account.

there was an episode of entourage on recently that made it look so easy to stroll into one of these places and pick up a sack of bud. it pissed me off, cause i thought it would draw unwanted and mostly untrue attention to the facilities and that something like this would happen. (i am not saying this happened because of a freakin tv show, but portraying these types of facilities so casually seemed really reckless.)

i know, right? what's up with people writing fiction that doesn't apply well to real life nowadays? totally irresponsible.

on topic: yet another case of state's rights meaning only what the federal government wants them to mean.

it is that easy. what would be really bad is if they showed how easy it is to get a license from a doctor.

by the way, does anyone know why these places charge the same prices as the black market? are any of them not for profit?

This is fantastically absurd. If this sort of affront to liberty bothers anyone, I would recommend that you google/YouTube Ron Paul. He's refreshingly sane and if he became president he would shut down the DEA.

Yes! Vote for the psycho racist to legalize pot! Tell me, how does the president shut down the DEA without Congressional consent?

It's the LAPD. If they're not roughing up black people for no reason, they're taking away your weed.

One would assume that because of the proposition, this whole thing wouldn't last too long in court?

Marijuana is just a stupid plant that makes people stupid (but also happens to help out sick people), and the majority of this country treat it like it's fucking devil spunk. Drink it and you'll start raping babies and killing nuns, right? Jesus christ. Cocaine is probably easier to traffic around than pot, because of all the attention that pot gets. Fucking stupid. War on drugs is going real well when you have to arrest elderly cancer patients, huh?

No No fighting real crime in LA would be work, its so much easier to raid a place where cancer patients have the "right" to receive medical marijuana

"Although the Compassionate Use Act allows the use of medical marijuana by a patient upon the recommendation or approval of a physician, California physicians should bear in mind that marijuana is listed in Schedule I of the federal Controlled Substances Act, which means that it has no accepted medical use under federal law."

Simple civics lesson here: federal law trumps state and local law.

I'm not saying the DEA was right in doing this or that it was a good use of their time, money and effort, but a crime's a crime and the people who own and operate these places can't be too surprised when their door gets kicked in.
