We are currently reading The Grapes of Wrath in one of my classes. Last week, a few of us were outside smoking with one of our teachers. Somebody complimented my classmate "Joe's" shoes.

"Joe made those himself," I said. (He'd told me he'd "designed" them by choosing the colors on the manufacturer's website.)

"Since when are you a 12 year old girl in Pakistan?" the teacher kidded Joe.

It was a mildly amusing joke. I probably chuckled. I could also have raked him over the coals for being callous to plight of sweatshop workers, especially in light of the book he was teaching that very day, but I didn't because I've said much more callous things in my time.

The great thing about San Francisco is that you can live in a glass house and still get stoned. Or boned. That's all I'm saying. Hallelujah. But I'm moving back to NYC first chance I get.

i think i agree with subrosa , calling it simply the entertainment capitol is a bit myopic. it ignores some incredibly important aspects of the state such as the development of silicon valley and their incredibly progressive policies toward stem cell funding.
