I couldnt find a discussion on Cloverfield in here. So..

Id like to know what people think.

Godzilla?
Or is JJ Abrams torching us with a weird ass saga for Lost??

I'm hearing/thinking Rodan. Which, y'know, is like Godzilla.

Regardless, I'm so very, very excited to see this. I'd been following the Transformers movie for two years before it came out- it was really very sad- and I went to the 8:00 preview showing. The Cloverfield preview came up, though, and my mind was off Transformers.

This thing looks fantabulous. Also, I do know that it isn't Lost related.

Doesn't look that interesting to me. Looks like your standard big-budget monster movie, but filmed with some sort of handheld. They showed this before Transformers, right? So there's your target audience right there.

*bump*

I just saw this movie tonight and it was awful. A few moments were good and the monster was pretty cool, but yeah. Major suckage all around. Sorry to anyone who liked it, it just didn't meet my expectations.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

If you read the Wiki article, the monster is apparently an alien. It crashes to Earth as shown in what's left of some recorded-over footage on the video camera. It has a tail, and drops dog-sized parasites that make people explode when bitten. Nice.

This would seem to go against what is in the FAQ on the IMDb page.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
Other websites attributed to the movie have secondary footage, graphics, and such protesting some fictional corporation for destroying the world's oceans. Which would imply that it came from the deep sea somewhere.

I heard they had to change it to a space alien when Bokrug quit the movie after the production company refused his rider of daily virgin sacrifices on set.

Yeah, maybe it's from this planet. But it still doesn't explain the last part of the movie; even the FAQ agrees about that part.

if you followed the viral campaign (good place to start is here), the bit that falls into the ocean in the final coney island scene is part of a tagruato (a japanese oil company that's part of the viral campaign, as well as the owner of slusho co.) satellite that falls to earth. the origin of the monster has no official explanation, but from all the evidence provided by the viral campaign, its origin is the ocean. it's a pretty massive campaign, though; good luck sifting through it all.

plus, check out this interview:

The concept for the monster (affectionately known simply as "Clover" in-house) is simple, says Abrams. "He's a baby. He's brand-new. He's confused, disoriented and irritable. And he's been down there in the water for thousands and thousands of years."

And where is he from? "We don't say - deliberately," notes Goddard. "Our movie doesn't have the scientist in the white lab coat who shows up and explains things like that. We don't have that scene."

Not only is the creature disoriented - he's downright angry. "There are a bunch of smaller things - humans - that are annoying him and shooting at him like a swarm of bees," observes Reeves. "None of these things are going to kill the monster, but they hurt it and it doesn't understand. It's this new environment that it finds frightening."

As part of a "post-birth ritual," as Abrams describes it, the monster is seen early on scratching his back on a building (destroying it in the process), to remove a layer of parasites that are set loose to wreak their own havoc on the city.

"They're these horrifying, dog-sized creatures that just scatter around the city and add to the nightmare of the evening," Abrams says. "The parasites have a voracious, rabid, bounding nature, but they also have a crab-like crawl," Reeves explains. "They have the viciousness of a dog, but with the ability to climb walls and stick to things."

sorry, kind of a "cloverfield" geek. blush

augh. fucking director had to provide a different story.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)

from /film:

Where did the Cloverfield Monster come from? Japan? The ocean near an offshore drilling site (as hinted by the viral)? Not so according to director Matt Reeves, who supposedly told Film School Rejects that an easter egg within the film tells of the Monster's origins. Apparently in the background of the footage that HUD had taped over, when Rob and Beth were at Coney Island, "something suspicious" drops into the water.

argh! make up your minds, guys!

the coney island crash landing took place a month prior to the film's events, but the falling object and splash were far too small to be the monster (whatever it is, it lands right next to the cruise ship and leaves only a small splash).

oh well, i kind of like how ambiguous the whole deal is.

Incorrect.

The movie had a budget of $25-$30 million. Not even close to big budget. And it showed no hallmarks (big name actors, huge promotion budget, product tie-ins) of big-budget movie.

You're not the first person I've encountered who has dismissed this movie due to this prejudice.

This saddens me because it really is a good film with many innovative ideas and rewarding moments.

I took the day off from work on Friday to see the 1:00 pm showing. You could tell there were a lot of kids that cut class and suits who took an extended lunch, so it was a diverse group.

But that having been said, when the movie ended, the theatre was quiet. NO ONE said a thing. This is the first time I've seen a movie and was like um...okee.

Still speechless and empty. Today been reading up on other sites about their opinions and whatnot.

We'll see about the sequel...

^^ I agree. there was a definite feeling of wtf when the movie was over.

however, it was a great ride and I'm really glad I saw it.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
I don't need to know the anatomic process that makes people explode when bitten by a spider/crab/dog/dinosaur thing, knowing that it happens adds an element of terror. clearly Marlena wasn't the first person who experienced that, and it felt raw and realistic that the paramedics didn't immediately realize they needed to get her into quarantine. why they didn't ask everyone if they had been bitten if it was such a big deal itched at my mind, but they were busy, right?

I don't care if the monster was a baby. if fact, I don't care where it came from at all. whether it came from outerspace and grew very quickly to be tanker-tipping or took a long time getting that big isn't pertinent. not knowing allowed me, as the audience, to be completely immersed in the fear of that moment our protagonists were enduring.

you know how cheesy and fake it feels when evil villains explain their entire plan to the hero? does it ever piss you off when the main character just happens to meet up with the people who know all of the details? that's exactly what this movie avoided. instead of having the scientist mussing with beakers and presidential press conference, this movie gave the everyone experience.

aside from that, I was really hoping that when Hud dropped the camera in central park that they would keep running and we could just decide for ourselves whether they made it.

But a partial set/scene list was already leaked a long time ago, so we knew the way it ended already.

Oh yeah...and I f'ing loved it. biggrin Did anyone else wait till the very end? After all the credits? wink
It was a good idea to check online at the things too look for before seeing the movie. Being aware of what to watch for IG and whatnot. If I can still call it IG now that the movies out. But oh well. biggrin

What's odd is that I haven't seen a commercial for the movie since Thursday. Not one and I was home all weekend watching tv. It was too cold to go out.

I was on the edge of my seat throughout the movie and I still can't stop talking about because how they left everything open. Still researching the net. I read about and heard what happens at the end, since I didn't stay at all past the credits. Awesome!

I totally agree with zombie_nirbhao, I HATE it when the villian tells you their plan. Like durh, we're gonna know what you are going to do next and how.

I saw it Friday because someone else offered to pay for my ticket. I was only planning on seeing it before if one of my closer friends decided to go and thus went into it with my expectations relatively low. As soon as I got to the theater someone I knew who worked there told me it wouldn't be Godzilla.

After it was over there was that definate air of 'WTF' in the theater. Then everyone filed out rather quickly and just as quietly. It was extremely weird. Personally, my expectations being so low to begin with, I thought it was okay. Not the greatest thing ever but made me think of World War Z except with a giant monster instead of a global zombie infestation. The monster itself rocked and I'm considering seeing it again just to get another look at it(really want to draw it). Better yet if anyone has a proper full pic of it I'd appriciate it(all I've seen online so far is fan impressions that just don't look 100% accurate).

There's a page at FilmSchoolRejects with drawings of the monster from people who saw pre-screenings a couple of weeks back. They're all pretty consistent, and they claim the first image is the closest to the actual critter.
