THIS JUST IN: You don't have to buy Chinese products to get poisoned! You can support American-made snacks like Veggie Booty, and still come away fighting for your life!

Another gastrointestinal illness-causing yummy-for-your-tummy snack has been added to the ever-growing list of recent scares and recalls, and believe it or not, this one isn't Chinese.

All lots and sizes of health food snack Veggie Booty have been recalled "because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella."

Veggie Booty, a puffed rice and corn snack that contains a blend of Spinach, Kale, Cabbage, Carrots, Broccoli and Salmonella, is described on the company site as "a life-changing snack that will help you eat healthier."

If by "eat healthier" they mean "dissuade you from ever eating processed and/or packaged foods again," then they are damn right.

Spit the booty out and brush your teeth with some Chinese antifreeze.

I know people who love that stuff.
But I always thought it tasted like packing foam, except with less flavor.

I love Veggie Booty, but haven't had any in a while. Any processed food runs the risk of becoming infected with something...

(even Terra Chips, which I also like)

Actually the ugly little secret of organic food is that it is often fertilized with sewage. Yummy-coli! You are better growing your own food if you can -- even 5 gallon buckets on the porch works.

That stuff is so awful. Spinach flavored cheetos? It doesn't even sound like a good idea. I don't know what possessed me to actually buy some.

I agree that you should grow your own food, if you possibly can -- if only because it tastes better. It doesn't take much, just reading up on basic gardening, and some preparation.

But *any* type of farm-grown food, organic or not, is at risk for cross-contamination by E.coli or salmonella. Properly handled manure shouldn't be risky. Outbreaks of either bacteria are usually traced to beef, pork or poultry in some form. In the recent case of the E coli outbreak in spinach, though no definitive decision was made by the FDA, it's widely thought that this crop was contaminated by poorly contained sewage from nearby cattle ranches, particularly those feeding cattle with a factory-farm grain diet.

Yep, properly handled manure isn't a problem, but sometimes they try to save money by using raw sewage -- not manure. Enough to gag a maggot, eh?

Well, I can't actually conclusively prove it was the Veggie Booty, but yeah, I did.

Also, I went to the company website linked in the article and now they're recalling "Super Veggie Tings" too (which, thankfully, I did not eat).
