The crux of this is the word "deficiente" not "retard." While "deficiente" may be translated as "retarded," it may also be translated as "mentally deficient," "feeble-minded," "deficient," "insufficient," "stupid as" or "moron." My Italian is a bit rusty, but I think the better translation that gets it closer to English usage is "moron." To me that removes it farther from "mental retardation" and changes it far away enough for me to say that the teacher should get a metal.

Is it homophobic and intolerant to find gay sex disgusting. I mean I am straight, so technically wouldn't it be weird if I was comfortable with gay sex. I am not saying I hate gays, just gay sex is gross to me, even when it is two women, I don't know seeing how you guys are all comfortable with it maybe it is wrong to be disturbed by two people of the same sex having sex...... frown

I don't know why you keep bringing this up in almost every story that involves homosexuality in any way? If it makes you that uncomfortable why do you have to keep telling people? I have found that those that protest the most are trying to convince themselves that their feelings are wrong. Want to go to a pride parade, big boy?

It seems that 'retarded' is still used by some US medical practicioners - in the UK it has been completely dropped by doctors, social services, etc, as it is deemed too offensive to those with, for instance, learning difficulties.

Actually, in all my years in medecine, I've never heard a mentally challenged person referred to as "retarded" by any health care professional. It may still be in use, though; I just haven't seen it.

It is still in use, at least to some small extent. A close relative of mine works for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Retardation, and while I'm not sure if they have a more modern term they use as opposed to "retarded", I do know that that is still the official name of the organization.

Isn't a faggot also a meatball? Faggots and gravy and all that? Well, it's the case in Britain. Probably why you don't hear that particular slur bandied about, because the gay men will just think you're ordering your dinner biggrin

Faggots and gravy? That evokes a very gross image that I wish I hadn't had.

It may be simply that they've had that name so long, they still use it, or it may be that I just haven't heard it used - perhaps it's less frequently used in clinical areas.

faggot does mean bundle of sticks but the reason it came to mean a gay man is because they used to round up gay men. Then they would use them as kindling when they would burn heretics and what they considered real criminals.

This thread would have been much funnier, had the incident taken place in Boston.

I am not happy with the use of "retard" as an insult; it is discriminatory in exactly the same way as "nigger".

If you fail to see the difference, then you're retarded.

OK, explain it to me.

One is used commonly in the hip hop music.

And it's also quite proper to use the term "nigger" when describing a person who nigs.

No doubt. Would any of the three of you actually like to address the point?

ill try to help here...the word 'nigger' has serious historical and cultural repercussions, regardless of how many modern day black rappers bandy it about. supposedly its ok for a black man or woman to use the word as their ancestors are the ones who suffered at its constant use during slightly darker days. the word retard, although equally bigoted in its use, doesnt stir up quite the sentiment among most people that the word nigger does. it does, ironically point to an actual deficiency. some people will say that nigger does also, as per webster, but its modern usage by cracker white people is whats more relevant here. i have encountered retarded people who call each other retarded as an insult, though, just as i have black friends who spend endless hours berating each other with 'nigger, please', see the difference? i often find things 'gay', and im not really homophobic, nor is there anything deficient or wrong with homosexuality. how gay is that? did that help at all, or am i just a gaytard nigger for trying to elaborate? see, the gaytard part is funny to me, but the nigger part is pretty offensive...im not trying to argue that gay people or retarded people have any more or less of a beef with society for its bigotry, im just saying nigger is the ultimate loaded word in american society, and it is for good reason.

My ex Alicia actually said that very thing to me once, and she does not watch SNL. She's from Boston, so she had the exact same accent. I had to show her the clip on YouTube to make her understand why I couldn't stop laughing.
