PETA president Ingrid Newkirk has issued an interesting letter in response to Michael Moore's latest film Sicko. She takes no issue with his disingenuous, heartstring-yanking tactics (duh, she's the president of PETA.) In fact, she starts things off nicely enough by congratulating him on the initial good reviews his film has received. Then she hits him with this:

Although we think that your film could actually help reform America’s sorely inadequate health care system, there’s an elephant in the room, and it is you.

Ouch! How is the portly purveyor of well-intentioned half-truths supposed to respond to this? On the one hand, she's just validated his alleged reason for being on this earth, i.e. bringing about much-needed reform through highly selective "case studies" and ironic vintage interludes. But on the other, she just called him a big fucking tub of fatty-fatty-fat-fat. Newkirk claims to be worried about his "weighty health problem" and wants to help him "fix that." She's only insulting you for your own good, tubby!

I'm sure that your fans would appreciate having you around longer!

See? Tough love, pure and simple (you enormous fucking slob.)

PETA's solution to obesity, of course, is to stop eating tortured dead animal parts. Newkirk then goes on to outline several facts about how going vegetarian can improve your health: reduced risk for heart attacks, obesity, cancer...all good points. She challenges him to take the 30 Day Veg Pledge, which she says, "can satisfy you easily" while teaching him about the benefits of not eating like some sort of horrific carnivorous elephant. She urges him to focus his "personal lens" on" the benefits of vegetarianism" and "meat's impact on America's health," i.e. make a propagandistic movie about it. Kind of like Supersize Me, only in reverse. Sub-size me? Not as catchy. We'll work on it.

Newkirk ends the letter by tempting him with recipes for healthy vegetarian treats like "faux fried chicken," and asks him to "lead the charge for a healthier [and presumably less murderful] America." Will Mike bite? I think this is the ultimate test of his commitment to turning America into a utopia of happy, healthy, peaceful, politically empowered uber-citizens. Will his desire to save everyone from the lies perpetuated by Big Industry override his insatiable cravings for delicious, artery-clogging piles of flesh? Will he finally be able to wear horizontal stripes? Only time will tell.

Pff, if Michael Moore weren't supposed to eat tortured dead animal parts, they wouldn't be so tasty. This is why I don't like pretentious people.

I enjoyed reading this thoroughly, simply on the grounds of the fantastic writing. What style! I hope that you keep writing stories for SG.

IMO it's not eating meat that contributes most to obesity, it's empty calorie snacking, large portions and not stopping when you're full. Plus I think Michael Moore has already been losing weight and didn't need to be called an elephant.

Last interview I saw with Moore, he actually admitted he was dieting a little and getting exercise. He didn't have the Jaba the Hut figure he used to.

And yeah if we weren't supposed to eat charred mammal flesh, we wouldnt be able to.

HEY INGRID!! See these two longer protruding teeth in my mouth? Yeah they are called canines! They are used for the tearing of meat so that I can better digest it!

I have spent the past 18 years both being a vegetarian and proving them wrong on that point. So very, very wrong.

You know, I used to respect once animal rights activists (and in some cases I still do), but PETA people always come out with that sort of attitude that even if I simpathize with some of their issues I wish I could kick their asses.
In this story, why the hell does she even care about this issue? Ok he is fat, but it's his choice and if it becomes a problem to him he'll deal with it and in his own terms! And that Veg Pledge? As if vegan diet is healthy. But whatever, to each his own.

What a tactless shill. This hag is trying to hitch her wagon to someone who has been successful at championing moral causes. There are probably better ways of doing so. Insulting someone and shoving your moral agenda down their throat (it is ok, MY moral agenda is healthy for you, it SHOULD go down your throat) is tacky at best.

It's not good. I dislike it. I dislike the taste, the texture, the greasy aftertaste, and the way it makes me feel an hour after eating. I've been a vegetarian for about 17 years now (with a few times of going back and trying meat again). Meat doesn't even look or smell like food to me anymore.

I'm not a member of PETA and occasionally think they're jackasses, but telling a vegetarian that they'd like meat if they would just eat it is just really fucking ignorant. smile

Done correctly, it is healthy. Most people don't have the patience or intelligence to make informed decisions about eating a truly balanced diet and replacing animal proteins and amino acids with the vegetable sources, so a lot of vegans and vegetarians end up unhealthy because they don't inform themselves of what the human body actually needs. Learning to be a healthy vegan or vegetarian is not easy.

Also, I would never tell anyone they needed to be a vegetarian, but I do make vegetarian dishes for my friends and encourage them to try new things (and usually wind up sharing recipes for vegetarian versions of things). Some of them have even started adding vegetarian dishes to their regular diets. smile

This is almost as good as when PETA got in trouble with Feminists for exploiting women.

As for being a vegetarian, I would have an easier time being a carnivore.
