i got my lip pierced with rings on each side, it healed up pretty readily...but i take piercings well. i just washed them and kept them clean. they werent too complicated for me.

i took them out after a few months though. i play trombone, and my professor basically told me to take them out or i would fail...grrr

how long what lasted? The act of piercing it? The pain? The lip ring itself?

I've had mine for only about 3 months but have no plans of getting rid of it anytime soon. I love it. It didn't hurt at all and healed a lot easier than I thought it would. I ate a burger (veggie) that very evening. I got it pierced with a ring but changed it to a labret stud a few weeks after and now I change it back and forth all the time (currently have a ring in). When I wear the labret stud the back of it does rub on my teeth which worries me a bit (if it's placed lower it won't do that - but then you can't wear a ring). The ring doesn't rub on anything.

That is all.

does it really impair your ability to talk?

not really at all...eating was a chore for a week or so, but after that you dont notice they are there. the piercing really becomes part of you, you dont even think about it

not at all. The only thing I noticed was the first day I could sort of hear it hitting my top teeth when I said certain letters but no one else could hear it (I asked) and I think I've since adapted so that doesn't even happen anymore.

i know how the " part of you" thing goes.

im wondering if a barbell would be more of a pain than a rin. it seems like it would.

Do you mean like a vertical labret? Or a regular labret stud? I mean, do you want both ends of the barbell to show?

i never had a barbell, so i dont know...the only problem with my rings is that i had seamless, and the little spacer would fall out, and then i would have to find it, and put it back in, which is a pain in the ass. the first set i had, which were captured bead, didnt do that, though.

Ya, that's a vertical labret. They can't put the top further back or it can break your top teeth.

I can wear a labret stud in mine (just a regular labret, not vertical) which is a stud on the end that shows but it's flat on the inside (where you can't see it).

My fiance had a pair of lip rings a couple of years ago that he switched to labret studs. When he got them done the guy told him, "you're lip's thicker on one side, so it'll probably heal differently." And he really did have one side that healed like a dream, and one that never did. Eventually he took them out, even though he liked them and they looked good. The funny thing is that the side that never healed has no scar, but the perfect side has a little pockmark now.

Anyway, talking was not a problem. With the rings he seemed to drool more than with the studs. He did the standard salt water soaks to heal them. All in all the only problem was the "thicker lip" thing on the one side.

Good luck! smile

I have a vertical labret. Didn't hurt that much going in and was swollen and tender for a while, like all piercings. It healed pretty well considering the buggers can be really difficult.
I can't imagine that top ball going back any farther. eeek

no vertical for me, i wear a ring 90+% of the time through a horizontal labret.

the only thing i've ever run into was adjusting to having the seal of my lips slightly different with having jewelry right there between them -which you'll get with a ring or barbell/stud with a vertical... otherwise, no problems. even that isn't a problem, i do everything normal now.

feels like someone busted you in the mouth the first few days to week, lip all swollen like you were punched. but it was easy to heal and was a-ok quite quick, as far as pain goes.

the piercing itself didn't hurt me, but god was it nasty feeling... gross. like a slimy slippery up through the flesh. but over quick!

took a good year, maybe a tad more, for the scar to mature... but again, no biggy.

have had no speaking problems (after the swelling ended, of course). it had absolutely no effect on that for me.

my labret was a piece of cake.
i love it.
haven't had any complications from it...other than the usual asshole old folks who always comment how repulsive they find it to be.
now that i have the labret though i find myself thinking the venom piercings would've been hotter....
i'm no where close to being ready to give up my labret piercing though.

i wanted a vertical labret really badly, and i went to the fellow to get it pierced, and he warned me that it may split my entire lip if my body was to reject the piercing, that's a scary thought, but i don't think that happens too often, i had my lip pierced on the side for about six months maybe and it was a gem, i just didn't find it terribly attractive, so i took it out to try and find a job

with lip rings, has anyone had any experience with the little hard-to-see retainer things? are those a viable option for when looking respectable is a must? or no?

i've worn one & i find i have to wear it "inside out" otherwise it's just as obvious as a regular stud -the only difference is that it tends to gross people out rather than just seeing a stud ball or such (the flat plastic bit when worn on the outside lets people get a clear view of the actual hole being held open)..

no sir, don't like it. if i must, i wear it backwards & trimmed to just barely reaching the surface (so it doesn't stick out, but just hold it open)... but it's really just more convenient & just as un/noticeable as a tiny stud.

I wear a clear plastic retainer all the time (I'm currently looking for a job) and no one can see it all. My piercing is right up under my lip (and my lips are pretty big wink ) so that probably helps. I asked my husband if he could see it and he had to look really close before he could see anything and then he said, "It just looks like a pimple." whatever

edited to say: RumpusParable, are you sure you're not wearing it the right way when you say inside out? On mine the flat plastic part goes on the inside of the lip where you can't see it and it just has a very, very tiny clear elastic type thing instead of a stud on the outside to hold the jewelery in there.

i had to use retainers when i was at work...they are a HUGE pain in the ass...you cant eat with them, because they get caught on your teeth, and then pull out of your lip. I kept having to worry about swallowing my retainers, because of this. they look kinda funny as well, to have a little piece of clear plastic coming out of your lip. but, they do work....and its worth it to have them pierced, i think.

well,
my lip swelled like a fuckin melon for about 3 days... but it wasn't too bad. My piercer (and also a girl I was seeing) told me no oral for 2 months and no kissing for 2 months...
I kissed after 2 weeks (coz i just couldn't hold out anymore) and oral after a month and my lip ring is still good. The only annoying thing about it is that sometimes when I have really thin saliva and I play with my lip ring it ends up on my face which i absolutely hate

other than that i think its good to go.
it didn't hurt either... it felt like pinching annoying. Not pain tho.. it was so wierd i was freakin out coz i thought it would hurt. I guess its just the idea of a massive needle going through your face but it was not too bad.

I want my lip pierced, whether it would be a vertical labret, or an actual lip piercing (whatever the difference is). What I'm most worried about is kissing, later on when it's all healed. Isn't weird, or doesn't it get in the way?

Is it more comfortable with a ring or barbell (vertical labret)?

my lip piercing was the easiest of all my piecings healing-wise. no blood, no infection, no nothing. it just sucked to eat certain foods, like sandwiches, anything that rests on your lip basically. drink with a straw so the glass doesnt have to rest on your bottom lip. mine healed very quickly and didn't give me any problems. oh and you can't kiss for a while either.
