I can hear it now "Yo mama's so fat, she has to use a special ambulance for patients weighing between 400 and 1000 pounds when she visits Calgary."

it may lack in decency AND sympathy, but this is pretty funny.

Yeah, I'm sorry but that almost made me shoot sprite out of my nose from laughing.

Critics of the US healthcare system may point to this new Canadian development as evidence of a more civilized system north of the border. But defenders of the American system can take comfort in the fact that the ambulance was designed and built in the good ol' USA.

This is a fine development..however it is not a universal solution. It would be highly impractical & unfair to expect every EMS squad or fire department to have one of these on hand.

Conversely...it would be highly impractical to even have one available for every county. It could take over an hour to have it dispatched to the place where it's needed.

I am a firefighter/EMT on a small department and I have dealt with large patients. We do what we can with what we have...and we always try our best to maintain the dignity of the patient. Sometimes, however...safety, urgency & practicality overrides dignity.

Sometimes having eight firemen & two cops drag the mattress out of the house & hoist the patient up into the ambulance is quicker & more practical in getting the patient to the hospital ASAP.

Like I said...there's nothing wrong with a specialized ambulance...but this has nothing to do with what is colloquially referred to as "the US healthcare system". It's about emergency medical care.

This is one ambulance in one city. Furthermore...the ambulance is great....if you can get the patient out of the house.

I don't want to get too far off track, but I didn't like the insinuation that while Canadians are sensitive to the needs of their patients...American EMS personnel couldn't be bothered.
