I think an important question that a lot of people are missing is: what kind of cheese is it?
Don't forget about the bread!!!
White?
Wheat
Rye?
Mmmmmm....rye....
I didn't know what a cafeteria was until I was in high school. I brown bagged it K-8, then it was pay or don't eat in high school.
They get wheat bread, and i'm assuming the cheese is an exceptionally processed variety of American cheese.

What's a "lunch tab?" When I was in school if we wanted to buy lunch we brought 50c (I'm sure it's quite a bit more now) and just paid it directly.
I think the parents pay a weekly or monthly bill which covers their kid's lunch. The tab thing is new to me, as well.

where i grew up we didn't even have cafeterias... you'd just sit in the hallway or outside with your lunch. then again, where i'm from they probably just expected us to kill wolves with our bare hands and roast them over coals.

why cant the kids just pack a fucking lunch?
Because some families can't afford food? Because some families have one over-worked parent at best who doesn't have the time nor the energy to pack little Suzy's (or Kiki's ) lunch?
All I know is that I had to carry a big giant RED free fucking lunch ticket through the lunch line for many years. It was humiliating, and it ostracized me from the other kids.
I'm an advocate of free nutritious breakfasts and lunches for all public school children. But hey, I'm living in a dream world and believe teachers should be paid what they're worth, and parents can afford to feed their kids.
Yeah i totally agree. I think you read me wrong.
I guess i'm just kind of annoyed by this. Every school I went to was either buy a lunch at the cafeteria (which we didnt even have until high school) or bring one. I'm sure we had some sort of program for children with less money... but i dont think they'd complain about it. this article is complaining about the type of free food people are getting.

This distresses me, as I'm worried there's going to be fewer kids willing to mime the Aquabats' ode to school lunches on Youtube. Which would be a true tragedy.
oh wow, I have not heard anything form the aquabats in waaaay too long, thank you for posting this.
i grew up pretty damned poor but i always had at least a crappy lunch made for me. it wasn't school sanctioned embarassment, but i was the only one without lunchables.

No, i'm more making fun of the idea of the cheese sandwich, rather than bitching about free food. And it's not free; as far as I can tell the sandwich is still being charged to the parent's tab, it's just that the kids no longer have a choice in what they eat.
My only real problem with the whole program is that they're choosing to punish the children when the parents do something wrong, otherwise I think it's all kind of funny.
