I'm not applying a double standard at all. I had to fight plenty of stereotypes when I was living in Toronto. I went out of my way to fight those stereotypes, to the point of watching the Tory Leadership Convention on the CBC in 2003.

I want to frame this paragraph and put it on my wall.

I didn't know you had it so rough. I apologize.

The whole two years I lived in Germany I never heard any negative references to my ethnicity. I think, in fact, that I heard "schön braun" several times a day.

Often black men have a different life experience.

There are plenty of good reasons to fight someone else. Use of a racial slur against you on their part is not one of them,

i think it's a great reason.

What ever happened to "sticks and stones..."?

My opinion on people who resort to that kind of shit during interpersonal conflicts is that they really aren't worth any more of my time. I'd rather walk away with dignity (and perhaps get them thrown out of whatever bar I'm at) than lowering myself by dignifying their remarks with a response.

You never miss an opportunity to be a giant tool. Of course, you don't have anything constructive to add...

From now on, whenever I see a black person, I am going to refer to them as "Mr. Ambassador" or "Ms. Ambassador."

You think that the idea that you represent your culture to people who are not from your culture to be a bit outlandish?

Maybe if everyone around that person had never seen someone from that culture before. In this case, it's not applicable, and you're still kind of a bigot.

In America that's entirely possible. In fact, in my city, if you're white, the chances of you interacting with black people with any frequency greater than seeing them at the mall occasionally and stopping next to them at traffic signals are pretty small.

I mean, you could say that the Canadians and Europeans who think that Americans are arrogant assholes are kind of bigoted. I would call it ignorance instead of bigotry, but that's just me.

When you are constantly exposed to stereotypes in the media, it's hard to not believe them to be true, especially when your real-world experience doesn't exactly refute those stereotypes. Even if you encounter a few who defy those stereotypes, it's still easy to say, "Well, they're the exception, not the rule". It's necessary for as many people as possible in a given group to fight the stereotypes to get people to realize how stupid they are.

Hmm, I'm going to have to disagree. I think his new CD is pretty great. I can't comment on him as a person, but I'm a fan of his music.

I don't know, I think it's a pretty noble mission. I mean, African-Americans are obviously responsible for all the negative stereotypes that have been created regarding their race, so it's their responsibility to prove them wrong. I think that's pretty reasonable. And while we're at it, I believe all Italian-Americans should be forced to join the police department, just to prove that they are in fact not a member of the mafia.

More like not reinforcing them.

And I never said that they were responsible. In fact, I said that ignorance breeds stereotypes.

I guess someone can't be bothered to actually read the fucking thread...

My argument is that it's not every single African-American's responsiblity to prove or disprove idiotic stereotypes. Or to not reinforce them, as you word it. Or to even respect the existence of these stereotypes. It's up to people with common sense to know what's fact and what's bullshit.

So do you believe that it's not every single American's responsibility to avoid reinforcing stereotypes when they travel internationally?

This was all over the hip hop stations on Sirius the other day... probably today as well.

It is ironic to be arrested for beating a man unconscious because he called you the "n" word.

I wish the rich would take advantage of the level of education and knowledge available to them and then apply it to life. If the privileged can't conduct themselves in a civilized manner what hope is there for the common man?
