CELEB: Timbaland Talks To German Girl; Fights With Her Boyfriend

Take a man that spends almost every waking moment in a studio into the outside world, force him to socialize and strange things may happen. According to a story on TMZ.com, top-shelf producer Timbaland got into a little scuffle in Germany this past weekend and ended up spending a night in the slammer.

Allegedly the producer was chatting with a woman at the bar of his hotel only to discover that the lady's boyfriend thought the two were a little too close. Some words were exchanged until Timbaland attacked the man for allegedly calling him "the N word." Others (not Timberlake) joined Tim in the beatdown, which spilled into the street outside the hotel, until police finally showed up and broke it up.

Timbaland was arrested and released on $1,000 bail this morning. Whether or not it was J.T. that delivered Tim's get-out-of-jail card is unknown.

Germany still uses phrases like "black music" and one of the more popular clubs around our post was called "Black Sounds."

None of us cared.

And, in case YOU were wondering, my OP had plenty of snark of it's own.

The point I was making was that there is a stereotype that black people are much quicker to violence than the average person. I'm not saying that I believe that stereotype. I don't. I'm just saying that it exists, and that Timbaland, by starting a fight over being called a "nigger", helped confirm that stereotype in the minds of people who believe it.

There are plenty of good reasons to fight someone else. Use of a racial slur against you on their part is not one of them, especially when your racial group has a reputation (one that isn't really fairly deserved, mind you) for irrational violence.

Yeah, don't fight because of some racist's opinions. Do you ever think before you type? Guess what? The fact that some people have fucked up ideas on race is on them, not anyone else. The fact that you don't see the double standard thatyou're applying (as usual) is sort of telling about your own prejudices.

Stereotypes are born out of ignorance, not racism. You can't expect ignorant people to educate themselves, because, as my favourite maths teacher in high school liked to say, "You don't know what you don't know".

Perhaps you don't believe in being a cultural ambassador. Well, I do. When you are in a different culture, you are representing your own culture. Visit France, and you become a cultural ambassador for the United States. Act like a jerk, and you will confirm the stereotype that Americans are assholes. Be polite and accomodating, and you will help to get rid of that stereotype. Sure, it's not YOUR fault that people in other parts of the world have a fucked up view of Americans, but you can do your part to fix it. If you don't do your part to fix it, then you become part of the problem.

I'm not applying a double standard at all. I had to fight plenty of stereotypes when I was living in Toronto. I went out of my way to fight those stereotypes, to the point of watching the Tory Leadership Convention on the CBC in 2003.
