When I think about domestic lesbiandom, I imagine two women reading Mary Oliver poetry out loud to each other over a plate of herbed quinoa.
Domestic violence isn’t something that really springs to mind, but apprently, I’m quite wrong.

Lesbians HATE herbed quinoa.

Joking. What I’m wrong about is that, increasingly, domestic violence has become a problem among same sex couples, reaching levels as common, and severe, as those of heterosexual couples.

According to The Times Online:

Same-sex abuse has largely been a hidden menace because many homosexual men and women are fearful of reporting incidents to police or mainstream support organisations, but research suggests that a greater percentage of gays and lesbians are living in fear of an abusive and dominant partner than previously thought.

I know what you’re thinking. ‘Organisations’ is spelled wrong. But The Times Online is a British publication, so shut your mouth, fool.

More importantly, the reason gays are reluctant to come forward and report incidents of abuse is because they fear the discrimination that they will meet from the authorities who come to investigate. That’s why in a momentous step, police in the UK urged those suffering from same-sex partner abuse to come forward and report their abusers to the authorities. Says Assistant Chief Constable Vince Sweeney, of Greater Manchester Police:

Our approach would be to treat all cases of domestic violence equally. Our protocol is quite clear about taking early positive action, gathering all the evidence, arresting the offender and removing them from the scene and getting them to court as quickly as possible.

Let it be a lesson to you queens in England, and you queenlets all over planet Earth. Love shouldn’t hurt. Unless you want it to.

For some reason, I am reminded of a scene from an episode of Family Guy where the topic of same-sex marriage has come up and basically Peter Griffin supports it, stating that if gays and lesbians want to get married and be miserable like the rest of us, then let them.

I don't think that's what they meant.

Quinoa is the greatest food stuff ever.

Also, it shouldn't be surprising that homosexuals are prone to the same problems in relationships as everyone else. I don't think anyone credible* would claim a cause-effect relationship between the manner in which you use your genitals and what sorts of mental/emotional problems you might have.

*Needed to make sure I excluded Alan Keyes from the discussion.

The last time I dabbled with lesbianism I felt oddly repulsed by herbed quinoa; perhaps there is a connection.

I was aware of this problem. I'm glad the UK coppers are enthusiastic about handling it. Hopefully they will convince the USA's entrenched puritanical hyperchristians that rather than a twisted utopia of lions kissing lambs, it's more realistic to just hope for people kissing eachother more often and beating on eachother less.

Not that it's necessarily germane to the discussion, but I feel compelled to quote Woody Allen: "The lion may lay down with the lamb, but the lamb won't get much sleep."

I was in a little 10 minute play here in the States about harassment and abuse on college campuses. I was the rich girl from Rhode Island who is emotionally abused.... by her girlfriend! "Ooh! Shocker!! Lesbians get hurt too!!" Ugh. I never knew what the big deal was. Why was this supposed to be surprising?!?
Lesbians are people, and lots of people do awful things to each other. frown

I'm glad someone noticed!

Indeed.

In 1952, Arnold Murray, a 19-year-old recent acquaintance of [Turing's] helped an accomplice to break into Turing's house, and Turing went to the police to report the crime. As a result of the police investigation, Turing acknowledged a sexual relationship with Murray, and they were charged with gross indecency under Section 11 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act of 1885.

It doesn't really surprise me that the levels of domestic violence among same-sex couples is similar to the level among heterosexual couples. Being an asshole and/or an abuser isn't affected by sexual orientation (or race, or religion, or whatever). There are assholes and abusers in all walks of life.

Of course, the fact that people who are being abused in same-sex couples are afraid to come forward for fear of further abuse in the form of discrimination is pretty shitty. Unfortunately, it's not surprising.

I really hope that, in another decade or so, this kind of thing won't even be an issue. I mean, domestic violence will (unfortunately) always be an issue, but hopefully the sexual orientation thing won't be. People have got to start being cool about it eventually, right?
