Good for Gisele, who responded to Mr. Pope's recent visit to her country to bluntly point out what a sexist dumbass he (and by extension the Catholic Church) is.

“It’s ridiculous to ban contraceptives,” Gisele Bundchen said last week in response to Pope Benedict’s condemnation of abortion and contraception on a recent visit to Brazil.

“You only have to think of the diseases that are transmitted without them [condoms]. I think it should be compulsory to use a contraceptive.”

After returning home from New York to take part in Rio de Janeiro’s Fashion Week, the Brazilian beauty said that the church’s rules were out of date, having been made centuries ago when women were expected to be virgins.

“Today no one is a virgin when they get married,” she was quoted as saying. “Show me someone who’s a virgin!”
....
Bundchen . . . said that a woman should have the right to choose what was best for her: “If she thinks she doesn’t have the money or the emotional condition to raise a child, why should she give birth?”

Appropriately enough, Gisele's namesake was apparently never canonized--but the Blessed Giselle's father (who was the Holy Roman Emperor) is the patron saint of those rejected by religious order.

If I'd gone to Mass today, I'd've said a prayer for her. But I never go to Mass anymore, because they always want to fuss at the congregation about abortion and it pisses me off.

Bitch_PhD, who happens to be Catholic, wishes to point out that there's a difference between criticizing the church and Catholic-bashing.

Show me someone who's a virgin!

Hmmm, how about the Pope for a start. Then there's my friends 4 year old daughter.

Also, a condom will be of no use to 2 virgins who get married and never stray as to catch a STD you kinda have to have unprotected sex in the first place.

Man, I'm not really religious (I'm a half Jew bought up Church of England and my last girlfriend was a muslim) but there seems to be a nasty trend of bashing religions.....

Why bother when there's Scientologists about. Those guys are as fruity as a nutcake. As Groucho Marx would have said if he was still around.

I read that the other day and went WOOOOT!

The "who's a virgin" comment was dumb but the rest was quite intelligent and well stated.

I remember being in catholic school my senior year and my religion teacher told us that catholics have on average 4 children per household (two of my close friends families have 8+) and that on average non-catholics have 1.7. I instantly said, "So you want us to BREED for the catholic church?" and was given my only detention of the year.

The only reason bashing Christian religions is so "trendy" among free thinking people is because free thinking people don't like pretentious assholes telling them how to live their lives. Why do you think that most people leave eastern religions alone? Because most of them don't act like know-it-all assholes.

And. I fail to see the distinction between Scientology and Christianity. They are both brainwashing cults.

And as for: "Also, a condom will be of no use to 2 virgins who get married and never stray as to catch a STD you kinda have to have unprotected sex in the first place." Oh goody, your fear mongering has completely inspired me to start believing in talking snakes.

I do not share the papal view on birth control methods, nor do I think it is reasonable to condemn the use of condoms however it seems -to me- far more unreasonable to expect that the head of this institution, who on top of everything is known to be a grade-A conservative to express a point of view that differs significantly from his beliefs. Gisele Bundchen has every right to voice her opinion, and criticize that which she doesn't like, just as the Pope has the right to express his and defend the church's point of view, only in his case it's more like a duty.

Clearly, certain aspects of the said doctrine should be updated but it's not like people are being excomunicated for using condoms or birth control pills.

Scientology is actually quite bizarre. I mean, Christianity isn't easy to swallow either, but I'll take the invisible Omnipotent god any day over eating my child's placenta.

Right, I'm just going to call you up on your post, because it is typical of a plethora of rather ill-informed, knee-jerk reactions I see all the time on this site, which make blanket statements about Christianity and those who practise it. In a way, I don't blame you if the prime examples you have are Dubya and perhaps The Pope, but I think it's important for people outside Christianity to realise that not all of us see eye-to-eye with them.

Contrary to popular belief, Christianity is not solely defined by what the Pope says. For a start, there are many denominations within Christianity (only one of which is led by The Vatican) and even many Catholics like me don't subscribe fully to the Vatican rhetoric as we know that its source is a select group of powerful, rich, white men, sitting in their ivory towers.

Christianity, along with the Roman Catholic denomination is actually practised by many moderate people, as its essential message is nothing to do with all that bile about women being supposedly inferior to men, contraception being supposedly bad and homosexuality being supposedly evil: The essential message is that those who practice should not live their lives to the detriment of other people, although it would be extremely fair to say that the tiny group of people who have power within these religions have flouted that message in numerous, vile ways throughout history and still continue to do so.

And. I fail to see the distinction between Scientology and Christianity. They are both brainwashing cults.

I don't actually know anything about Scientology, apart from the fact that Tom Cruise is one and that he's arguably cuckoo; so can't comment on any similarities, but I would have thought that one of the defining features of a cult is one's inability to escape or renounce it. Again, I have no idea about Scientology's standpoint on that, but I know lots of people who were born and raised in to various Christian denominations, but have decided that it wasn't for them as they grew older. It's no biggie; plenty of people decide not to believe or practise their former faiths (in all fairness, probably because the rich, white men have rendered that faith completely incompatible with their lifestyles) but they're certainly not hunted down and killed. If you don't want to be a Christian, don't be a Christian. I couldn't care less whether you were one or not. There might be those who do, but they don't speak for me, as they are fundamentalists. I'll get to those in a sec.

And as for: "Also, a condom will be of no use to 2 virgins who get married and never stray as to catch a STD you kinda have to have unprotected sex in the first place." Oh goody, your fear mongering has completely inspired me to start believing in talking snakes.

Yeah, it's unrealistic to assume that people would and indeed should be virgins until their wedding day. I don't expect the Vatican to change its standpoint on contraception any time soon (especially with the current Pope) but most of us use contraception, because we know that it is sensible and we are not prepared to relinquish control in such a fundamental area of our lives as parenthood and sexual health just because some man said we should. I know there are some Christians out there who swallow every last doctrine that is fed to them and take things way too literally, but guess what? We're not all fundamentalists; besides which, you get fundies in every religion; even those elusive 'eastern religions' of which you spoke.
