He is undoubtably a great conceptual artist , which people either love or hate..But his ideas are genuinely original , which causes people to be afraid ..Tesla anyone ?

Huh?!

How original is having your assistants paint nearly exact replicas of existing photographs? And without paying royalties to the photographers!

hmmm, is it just me or more people saying they hate the peice of art becouse of the rediculouse price amount instead of the peice its self. you could even look further and note that he has taken death (that is supposed to have been some one) and then incrusted dimonds and set a asking price that most people will laugh at and say its over priced and there fore they are judging the value of the human life of the person. I think it looks very pretty and the bidding price is part of the peice.

Does it sit at the end of an ancient stone hall way rife with booby traps, on a contraption that will set off the Ultimate Booby Trap if you remove it?

I'm really not into Damien Hirst's work. He is among the highest paid living artists in the world and I have yet to be impressed with anything he has done. It's all shock me shock me shock me.

I totally agree. I think hes rubbish!

I would say that Hirst is definitely well overblown, but I think that this piece is pretty thoughtful when you get behind the ostentation and shock value of it all. He does actually seem to have some concept behind his work, and he does, in fact go to great expense to create a piece.

I think this piece in many ways does play with context, and I do love a good juxtaposition with multiple readings. And you must admit that in this piece, he has created a cultural artifact that will remain as a part of our legacy through the ages. When they dig this sucker up in a milliion years, they will truly have an idea of what we were like.

I'd like it much much more of the gallery room it's displayed in was full of boobie-traps triggered by shadows and foot-steps that triggered poison blow-dart guns and collapsing ceilings.

I think this is probably the closest thing to 'art' that he has ever made.

I would mind a few of these crystal skulls to go with it

I have a really tough time with conceptual art. Maybe it's the stage director in me that looks at something like Marcel Duchamp's Fountain and says "'That's clever and all, but who wants it in their living room?"

To be fair, the bulk of art created is not made with the intent to be displayed in living rooms.

I'm not going to weigh in here on whether the piece succeeds or not, but the people here who are trashing the work just because it's "diamond-encrusted and made of platinum" aren't making any sense. The entire history of sculpture and many other art forms artists have used the most expensive and rare materials in making pieces - Jade chalices from the Ming Dynasty, gold murals in Constantinople, or marble sculptures like the Ecstasy of St. Theresa, are all ridiculously expensive works of art from precious and rare materials and they are no less "art" then something made of clay.

for sure...hes just following in the footsteps of all the other "bad boy" artists that came before him. its sooo not a new thing. look at richard serra or serrano's piss christ (as someone else mentioned in a comment). hirst is hysterical. i mean...this story has 66 comments...he just likes to push boundaries and make people go bonkers. and if someone actually BUYS the thing for 99m...well, then the joke is on them!

or maybe its not considering that in pre renaissance italy painted altars were not valued for their actuall "art", but rather for how much gold paint was used. this is actually almost a return to that "pre enlightened" value.

eh sorry that was longer than expected.

Oh Tuffy, the hypocrisy! I've heard what the entranceway to your bedroom from your living room is like...

Personally - I'm jealous. Do you know how hard it is to keep my plasma tv dry in my living room next to a 75 feet Baroque marble fountain ?
