Back in 7th grade I dared to arrive at a Halloween costume party dressed as my favorite comic book character, Death -- the morbidly endearing brainchild of writer and illustrator Neil Gaiman. I thought I was cutting edge, but instead I was forced to endure a night of spoiled brats asking me why I had a "black worm" drawn on my cheek. That was then.

This is now. Gaiman, the real dream-king, is rumored to be making his directorial debut this year with a silver-screen version of his beloved graphic-novel Death: The High Cost of Living.

According to Cinematical,

Film Ick says that Gaiman will be adapting his graphic novel for the screen and directing with production to start sometime in late Autumn in the U.K. -- even though, as the article states, the graphic novel takes place mainly in the U.S. At the site there's also several other bits and pieces of information, including that Gaiman will be including new story items in the film -- particularly an arc about roving Buddhist Monks -- that were not in the original graphic novel, some rumors about the potential casting of soon-to-be-everywhere Shia LaBeouf as male lead Sexton Funival and, of course, the big question of who will play the title character: Death herself.

Time to go dust off that old top hat...

but seriously, this is bad news. who could possibly play death correctly.

ive got no pref on gaiman to direct, other than he better get a talented DP.

trivia: hey, one of these 3 issues was a recall: it was printed without pricing info. you were supposed to hand over your copy and get a free reprint. i still have my unpriced copy... any comic nerd wanna tell me if thats worth something yet?

I once wrote a song about the personifaction of death as a goth girl. Not exactly the same, because my version has a tattoo of a black rose on her arm instead of the swirly thing, but same idea. Anyway, I think the whole idea of associating death with beauty is really neat and ironic.

Thank you so fucking much for posting this. Niel Gaiman's Death character has been a big part of my life and I can't wait to see a movie with her in it. I just hope they find someone decent to play her... And I hope I'm forgiving enough for it not being absolutely perfect.

You know, if he couldn't direct it, Alex Proyas might not be a bad choice.

The only Gaimen worth much are The Sandman 1 and first appearance of Death... and not many of the other are much over cover.

Alas, my Overstreet is not current...and it's buried in a comic box.frown

which is why SUPERMAN can kick the SANDMAN's ass any day of the week
whatever

pfft, like your overstreet needs to be current. i pretty much only buy alternative or artist's own brand comics anymore, so i can be assured that my collection has only gone DOWN in value!

I was wondering when one of the Sandman characters would be a movie. I'm glad to hear he will be directing and adapting it.

I wondered when this was finally going to happen. He mentioned that the film had been optioned at a Comic-Con panel two or three years ago (he also showed some Mirror Mask footage; it was awesome). And I expect Neil will find a damn fine Death.

Seriously...this should happen more often -- where the author of the book or comic directs the movie from start to finish. This is ground-breaking, and sure to be a hit from this A-list author biggrin

I agree that Zooey would be a decent fit.
it might also be interesting to see Stephanie Leonidas from mirrormask brought back in. I think she could play the role.

definitely looking forward to this.

be nice to see Dream and Delerium make an apperance.

I have mixed feelings. Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite writers. The high cost of living is a wonderful story and it will be nice to know that the material won't be mishandled in the way that Constantine and LXG were. I just hope it doesn't end up being kind of crappy due to him not having very much directing experience. Also being involved in this project will take time away from him writing more stuff.
