Zoetica

NEWSWIRE

Secret Photoshop Agent and resident Fashion Icon Zoetica often has the staff at SGHQ asking, "What's Zo Wearing?" Her unique and eccentric style is a rallying call to those who suffer from mainstream malaise. Each week, she tells us how she's combined ordinary items to create her extraordinary look. Undaunted by unusual combinations, "What's Zo Wearing" is SG's answer to middle-of-the-road makeover shows.

The Closeting is upon me again, my peeps. My usual closeting friend has moved away and isn't around to assist. Again my wardrobe threatens to attack every time i pull back the curtains. I can't see at least 1/4 of everything I own for the mess! It's an inscrutable black hole, my closet, and the task is so overwhelming that I almost just want to surrender.

For now I am brainstorming, examining my options. Do I assign myself a set number of items per category, and pick which to get rid of? X amount of skirts, X pairs of trousers, etc? Do I purge all things bearing a certain characteristic? Frankly, I'm baffled.

So! What system do you use when it's time to get rid of stuff? The most helpful answers may get you stuff from my closet, so think hard, or I may have to resort to a very very long videochat.

Shrug: $20 Forever 21
Vest: $12 LA Fashion district
Beaded tank top: $6 LA Fashion district
Trousers: H&M San Francisco

Repeated washings destroy my fabrics quickly.

Those are cute "trousers."

that second to last photo looks like the most fun you've had doing this series. you usually look so serious.

in that vein...you approach to figuring out your wardrobe sounds overly logical for something that's supposed to be about style.

A good starting point would be to sift through what you have and figure out which things you absolutely WANT to keep...start negotiating from there.

Personally I try and see what I haven't worn in a certain amount of time. Say a year. And take out the things that are special occasion pieces. The rest I get rid of.

that little vest is absolutely adorable!

so... having very limited wardrobe space, i had to make rules to keep myself from having full closet, bureau, and stuff still all over the place. i hope they can help you!

i get rid of things that:
have holes where they aren't supposed to.
have stains that can't be removed.
i haven't worn in a year.
i can't add to definite keeper pieces to make at least 3 or 4 outfits.

i agree with Osaka as well... if it makes you feel awkward, it should go.

if all of that doesn't work, i find a closet buddy!

good luck, beautiful!

An odd thing to fixate on, but I LOVED the setting for this little WZW shoot. LA is so gorgeous, even in its backyards and sidelots and gates. It's my favorite place on earth.

And the bouncing blue beauty didn't hurt none neither.

"would i wear this today or any time this month?" If the answer is no, then it's OUT (unless it's winter/summer clothes then you can't chuck it since it's seasonal)

It takes me forever to clean out my closet. But what I generally do is:

- Lay every thing out so I can see it.
- Pick out all the clothes I know make me feel awkward, or I just don't like anymore and get rid of those.
- Pick out clothes that don't fit me, but I kept around for some reason. I get rid of those.
- Pick out the clothes I haven't worn in over a year, and unless it's something I just completely forgot about and love, I get rid of it. I only let sentimentality apply to like, one article of clothing. =D
- Make sure I try some of the stuff on again, just in case the way it fits changes or something and I end up liking it, or disliking it.

That usually gets rid of enough for me. But like the person above me said, I think you have enough of a following to get a fair amount of money if you sell it on Ebay, and to donate it to charity would be super awesome. Or, you could just take the clothes and donate them right off the bat to a Good Will or something similar. If I found some clothes like yours in Good Will, I'd probably cry with excitement, as we don't have much in the ones in Connecticut. It's mostly mom jeans and holiday sweaters.
