buddhism mentions ignorance a lot, but not so much stupidity. Stupidity is very metaphysically unsatisfactory as it makes sentient beings unable to differentiate between real teachings and profiteering hucksterism. It's a huge letdown to people who genuinely want to help others to get genuinely enlightened.

very well said. i watched the first twenty minutes, and assumed part of the reason it seemed so terribly unappealing was because it was aimed at the american market, and even scientologists market themselves differently round this wee rock. i guess other people find it unappealing even if they are used to soft focus....

Ok I just checked out this site and there is an audio link on it that says EVERYONE is intelligent. Yes. EVERYONE!

Oh my GOD! That means, even my STUPID nemesis is INTELLIGENT. But I prove that theory WRONG every week!!!!!!

This is a PROMISCUOUS HOAX. The Secret is that you cannot achieve absolute euphoria and still achieve harmony with the universe as they are not goals of any higher intelligence or this planet would have been nuked out of existence a long time ago.

The Real Secret (TM), is that we are all very insignificant, compared to EVERYTHING ELSE (ie: God starring as the letter x, in the equation of the relation of ourselves to EVERYTHING ELSE).

So this MARKETING DRIVEL called "The Secret" is a really cool and chic cult. But it's still a cult.

The Secret infuriates me so, so much.

My boss at my last job told me she was very into it, and my respect for her dropped tenfold. How can you possibly respect anyone who believes it?

I'm currently envisioning Pete Wentz showing up at my door with a twenty-pound bag of money from schilling Axe Body Spray and his Italian sportscar running. MAKE IT SO, SECRET!!!

Well I didn't really read this I read the little blurb on the front page.

But that was enough for me to make a correct judgement! smile

I live my life by the Anthony Robbins personal power system..well not the system... I just taped the info-mercial..and it works! Especially the part with Leeza Gibbons!

Nice Job...

p.s. Thanks for selling all your other articles at the bottom of the article about how full of shit people are for selling their articles! Hilarious! Nice touch.

I have been wondering why, and saddened by the idea that such a materialistic philosophy is so praised and popular.

All do respect but everyone here is aware that the "Secret" is not a religion, right? Religion comes from the root Re-ligio meaning to bind back. Religions are predicated on the idea that you are separate from God and must be trained to be obedient and re-shaped like a bonsai tree. Christianity is a religion. Buddhism is not a religion. It is a system of mental and spiritual hygiene. The Secret is a DVD and a book.

As for it being a cult. There's no Reverend Moon running the whole thing. It's like any book of personal growth. You are expected to go out and do it on your own. Yes there are people who will treat it as such but.. have you been to a comic book convention lately? There are people who will treat ANYTHING like that. It's not a cult anymore than love of grindhouse or Dune. Have you ever been asked to cough up anything other than the price of the book or the DVD and have you ever been told that your salvation depends on it? no.. you haven't. It may have been pushed on you like any other product. But that's it.

There are Buddhists in LA who chant for a new Mercedes. There are Christians that pray for the death of children in other countries. There are Wiccans who cast revenge spells. The phrase "Kill them all, God will sort them out" is a paraphrase from a statement by a catholic priest. And there will be those that try to use the teachings of the Secret for negative ends. Let he who is without any belief system throw the first stone..not so fast atheists! smile

As for it being ripped off from Buddhism. Not so much. "The Secret" comes from certain books that were very big at the beginning of the 20th century like "Think and Grow Rich" and "The Science of Getting Rich". These were depression era books aimed at teaching the "common man" the tools for wealth. These were all written based on the hermetic traditions. That tablet they steal and hide in the beginning of the movie is a reference to the emerald tablet of hermes. The Law of attraction is directly taken from those teachings. Pre-christian teachings.

There are elements of Buddhism and Christianity thrown in to make the message easy on the ears of people who are Christian or Buddhist in name only. A teacher must be aware of the pre-dispositions of her audience or she will never be able to reach them.

And insofar as it offends people because of it's message of total responsibility. It may or may not be true but I think we are all served better if we live that way. I take responsibility for everything in my life. Good or Bad. It is the reason I am no longer a christian. I could never lay my sins on the shoulders of an innocent man, even if he supposedly chose to take them, so that I could reach salvation. If there is any good that will come form my life it will come from my works and my words and if I fail then it will be..in the immortal words of Robert Plant...Nobody's fault but mine.

If you think ill of me for what I have said here or still think the lessons, not the book or the press, but the lessons of the secret are wholly negative then I ask you to try and strip away your animosity and look for what you could learn from it. Even if it is how not to be.

If you are offended by materialism. Give something away today.

If you think it is a way for weak minds to join together then spend sometime alone meditating or thinking your own thoughts.

If you think it is a bad book. Write a good one.

We live in a time were criticism is now passed off as action. It is why we are in such political turmoil. If "the Secret" really lights a fire in your belly then don't let that fire burn out. Use it. Turn your distain and rage into something uselful.

If you have passion and really care about people...The world needs you.

At least that is what I got from the Secret.

I've only ever heard about the 'secret' twice in my life, (I guess I'm one of the lucky ones).

Both times were via SG.

That's the most eloquent defence of The Secret I've ever heard.

But - do you believe that The Secret is genuinely a supernatural force that brings good things to people who wish for them? In which case, I wouldn't describe it as a cult or religion, but I would say its baseless mysticism.

If The Secret is just claiming that having a positive attitude can sometimes help people achieve their goals, which is a fairly obvious truism, then why does there need to be all this fuss and mystique surrounding it? Surely the book could've just been one sentence long?

Also, how do you explain it when people try to attract things, but don't get them? It seems like everytime someone gets what they've been wanting, its used as evidence for The Secret, but in the majority of cases where people don't get what they try to 'attract' its just ignored.
