The first time I saw Brian De Palma's tour de force gangster flick, The Untouchables, I was just a child. It was the first mobster movie I'd ever seen and it reeked of all the dangerous bravado one fantasizes about when growing up in ho-hum suburbia. Looking back, my father probably shouldn't have let me watch it but I was fascinated and, not to mention, quite an incorrigible little girl. The 1987 film followed the deadly, cat and mouse game played between legendary Chicago crime boss Al Capone (an extravagantly bad-ass Robert DeNiro), federal agent Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) and Irish cop Jimmy Malone (a role that won Sean Connery an Oscar.) The film is a classic and the slack-jawed memory of watching it for the first time has always kept me on the edge of my seat.

That is, until now.

What better way to ruin a film's legacy than by announcing plans for a prequel. I'm starting to think that the term "prequel" should be somehow changed into a four-letter word. Not only does The Untouchables: Capone Rising have a less-than-stellar title, but Nicolas Cage has signed on to reprise the Al Capone role. The real kicker is that Capone Rising follows a younger Capone on his rise to infamy. How old is Cage? Like, 50? Hard to believe he's going to be able to pull off a young mob boss' climb to the top -- especially when he's got DeNiro's patent leather shoes to fill. Please, somebody has got tell this guy that just because he's a Coppola, it doesn't make him a gangster.

Remember that cool cult-hero / dweeb from Vampire's Kiss & Raising Arizona, and so many more? Man, I sure do miss that guy!

Nicholas Cage the movie star is like Huffy deciding to make cars!

I watched Lord of War this weekend and would have preferred any one of my drunk uncles over Cage in that stink-bomb. Seriously, a high on pot George W Bush would be a better actor.

But I think you're missing that Cage will do the most awesome comedic reinterpretation of Capone. Down to the ridiculous age mismatch.

Evidence follows.

Nicolas Cage is like the Bob Seger of acting. He's so bad at doing what he does. But I love to watch him do it.

Holy Mackrel,
That clip from Con-Air is amazingly crafted. The cheese of Cusack's goofy mug, just makes it perfect. I was a young man when that movie came out, so I didn't realize how cleverly that was constructed - It is perfectly terrible. I'm impressed. I don't think more cliche and and stiff acting could have been crammed into a scene that short.

Just think of the lightbulb going off in the writer or directors head, when he thought..."at first, the little girl will be afraid of Nick Cage, but then her mother will tell her to be nice, but Nick sees through that shit. He doesn't take any shit, so he's like, 'Nah, that's cool. I'll earn my daughter's trust the way I earned my diabetic cell mate's trust - with robotic acting.' High five's all around!"

Snake Eyes? I loved that movie. I like De Palmas movies but then The Black Dahlia wasnt what i expected but still ejoyable. As for the thought of "young" Al Capone by Nick Cage sounds kinda funky but i think he works well with De Palma. I'm sure i'll enjoy Capone Rising but i'm not expecting another Untouchables greatness.

Speaking of Kiss of Death...David Caruso comes to mind , talk about movie career BUST...way to leave NYPD Blue dumbass!!

Costner makes good baseball movies. Dances with Wolves I enjoyed, but mostly for the story and the scenary.

Cage, I've enjoyed some of his movies, but I have not enjoyed way more. As for this whole prequel thing....you'd have to pay me millions just to watch it if Cage plays the role of Capone.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure Al Capone was a short guy. How's Cage gonna play this .... shoes on his knees?

They have tackled that problem in films before. Some little movie made in New Zealand about fairies and what not did a pretty smart job.
Now will they even BOTHER to deal with that given in this film. Doubtful.
I say on your knees Nic. It'd be interesting, to say the least ...

i definitely didnt love Snake Eyes and i'm a HUGE De Palma fan. i thought it was too flashy, if BD had done it 20 years ago on a much lower budget it would have been better. but it was too overblown

i hated black dahlia so much. loved femme fatale though

That Heath Ledger as joker thread told me that I have to wait to see the movie before I say whether or not I think Nick Cage will be any good in it. I'm not allowed to use his previous performances as a barometer. It wouldn't matter anyhow since Cage doesn't have any overly sentimental and self-indulgent gay cowboy movies on his resume...except Face/off.

i like to think this article had something to do with this lovely news:

300 star GERARD BUTLER will take on fellow Scot SEAN CONNERY's role in the prequel to THE UNTOUCHABLES, but he won't be starring alongside NICOLAS CAGE. Cage was slated to play gangster Al Capone in Brian De Palma's film, but has pulled out due to scheduling conflicts. The 1987 original starred Connery, Kevin Costner and Andy Garcia, with Robert De Niro as Capone.
