... SG news "writers" aren't very good (or timely) and have to rely on inflammatory titles, statements, & allusions to get anybody to read them. Then we're supposed to get all outraged, start arguing & tear each other apart for 11 pages. Not exactly what I'd call journalism (or good writing on any level, actually), but it still beats Fox News...

Oh my sweet lord baby Jesus in Heaven. How many times are we going to have this conversation. From the newswire FAQ:

The news is totally biased! Why don't you publish the truth???

The news is submitted by random fuckbags like you and me. For the most part we're not career journalists, just interested onlookers. Editors do strive for a certain degree of quality in news postings, but if you feel your point of view or area of interest is being overlooked, the best thing to do is submit some news yourself!

We are not a reputable, objective news source. Walter Cronkite, Edward R. Murrow and other fat senior citizens who think of news as objective would/do hate the SG Newswire. We are part gossip rag, part talk radio, part daily show, part djs (spinning you the newspaper stories instead of songs). Other sites report; we mangle, spin, pontificate upon, slant and direct you to the stuff on the web we think worthy of your notice, whether for humor's sake, or because it's important.

Write your own stories if you want something else out of the newswire. SG is a community. It encourages participation, not just criticism.

Besides which, the "teaser" headline is a classic internet style. Does CNN.com do it? No. Does SG want to be CNN. Hells no.

Lighten up everybody.

Granted. but when you put the word "NEWS" on something, it implies a certain level of journalistic integrity. You can't have it both ways...

And I'm not complaining, just observing...

The headline makes him sound like a pedophile. What was illegal, immoral, or unethical about the method he used to cast his movie? What does the DUI have to do with how he cast his movie?

Wow. I thought this article was written in a rather facetious tone. I thought the article was kinda funny, you know - making the point that the "lurker fever" can be a bit on the out-of-hand side?

And River was not in DRUGSTORE COWBOY (great film), that was MY OWN PRIVATE IDAHO (another great film). And many of his friends have commented that River was not the same after that film. Don't know that that is Van Sants fault, though.

So, the moral: Not al lurkers are pervs. Or are they?

Guys, I know this might be a little high-concept for some of you, but perhaps they're riffing on the endless stories of internet kiddie stalkers that have been prevalent since, oh, the mid fucking '90s. I know, rebel concept, but try staying with the plot once in a while.

As for the DUI, ask yourself, what was the last news you heard about Van Sant? Might it have been his DUI? Is it standard practice to reference recent and/or notable news about a person when writing a story about them?

As opposed to all those other stalwart entertainment news outlets that report the facts and only the facts. The field is a gossip grist mill, not journalism, for christ's sake.

Then we're supposed to get all outraged, start arguing & tear each other apart for 11 pages.

You've really held out against temptation here.

Aw, come on- W.R. Hearst was a paragon of honest news reporting. Seriously, though- you're totally right, but I don't think that's acceptable as an excuse. All the more reason we should raise our standards, I say.

Is this a chiding ref. to my previous posts or to that line in particular? (sorry, I'm a little dense today)

We? This is participatory media, but you haven't written any stories.

Both- I'm clowning you for being such an ace trope-spotter but still joining in on the outrage, arguing, tearing, etc.

Myspace is part of our culture. Meeting people and casting for projects online is not a new thing, and not just the domain of weirdos and pedophiles; even if you are casting for a younger bracket; which is what Gus is doing. Gus is NOT a creep, and having a DUI is not evidence of the same. There is nothing wrong with casting online, as his movie calls for it, and i'm sure every parent of all the kids that were casted is excited that their kid has the opportunity to act in a film.

Quit polluting SG news with biased and uninformed garbage like this!

If Asia Argento were using the same tactics to cast her new movie would she get a "news article" like this written about her? Fuck no, SG newswire would likely be all over how awesome she was. (Yeah, I'm playing the gender/age/sexuality card in his defense..)

There has to be a name for the logical fallacy that goes "Would this have happened if that happened? No way! Thus, I'm right."

People seem to only get pissy about the quality of the news when it's their little crush that's being lampooned.

When they came for Gus Van Sant,
I remained silent,
Because I don't like Gus Van Sant.
When they mocked the Killers,
I said nothing,
Because I don't like the killers.
When they called Mitt Romney a taint licker,
I abstained,
Because I don't really give a shit
When they came for me
There was no one left so speak out

Van Sant used some actual street-hustlers in 'my own private idaho' and cast unknowns in 'elephant' and i think it worked well. i like that he uses 'real people' in some of his films and he seems to do a good job of knowing which roles need real actors. (i think 'my own private idaho' is a good example of this.) why is it creepier to find teenagers on the internet than to approach them on the street or hold an 'open call' for non-actors?
