OLD SKOOL

Ok...so I've been trying to think of what I can do as a second job. While I do work a traditional 40+ hour week...my schedule is such that I can have a second job without spreading myself too thin.

For the last two years, I've been doing trade work as a side job; painting, carpentry, and general home improvement.

Most of the guys I work with in the firehouse do some sort of trade work because it lends itself to our schedule. We work for 24 hours straight...and then we are off for three days. So, trade work & contracting is condusive to that type of schedule. You can schedule jobs around your personal days off.

Here's my problem...I don't really want to do contracting work anymore. I've done some type of it on and off for over 10 years and I just don't want to strap on a tool-belt for pay anymore.

I don't know what other types of jobs there are out there that I can manage around my schedule at the fire house. So, I'm asking you guys for some suggestions.

Here are my requirements:

1. It can't have an expensive startup fee...ie; real estate license
2. It can't require any lengthy schooling/certification...such as going back for another degree
3. Preferrably...the employer would understand that sometimes, albeit rarely, I may have to leave withotu notice because of a fire.

I dunno....I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks.

FridgeMagnet has a good point with the Voice Over Actor suggestion.

I'm just getting in to that right now, and if you got the voice or the skill (to change your voice) it can be very lucrative.

Depending on what you're doin', weather it be Radio Announcing or simply spots (Radio Ads), it can take anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours. In most cases, you'd get paid per job, not per hour.

becoming a successful voice actor will take a minimum of ten years

Well yeah, that's if you wanna go career. The OP was talkin' about a secondary job. Doin' voice work for a local radio station is a pretty chill gig that doesn't have to dominate your time. It's also a great way to fix any latent speech problems that you may have i.e. excessive 'ummm's and 'uhhhh's.

Become a pimp?

I know one or two people who work as movie extras in their spare time... they get well paid, too. Usually around €100 a day or more.

It's proven fact that ladies love firemen. Especially in turnouts.
I'm sure you could use that to your financial advantage.
