Well, it's one pic. And, perhaps, one incarnation of the make-up. Who knows how the Joker will evolve throughout the film -- this might just be after his mishap. I think it's hella cool. At least Heath doesn't have a green emo haircut ala Peter Parker in Spider-Man 3. And it's much better than Cesar Romero from the 1960s TV show. Romero refused to shave his moustache and simply put the white make-up over it. Looked kinda cheesy, which is perhaps a pointless remark when discussing the TV show.
Batman Begins is brilliant and I trust Nolan to deliver a realistic vision that will be nightmarish.
Amen.
I never though that Scarecrow would be portrayed so fucking... evil. And well, at that.
You people are so sensitve to words, given the alleged counter culture nature of the site. PC police. My grandpa was a pole smoker. Alas, he died from lung cancer and was buried near his home in Warsaw.
Also if you're really worried about character assassination you can't have read very many comics. Characters get bent over the table and fucked six ways to sunday in comics ALL THE TIME. All it takes is one shitty writer or artist having their moment in the sun to COMPLETELY fuck with canon.
That being said, I still think this is gonna be awesome.
I'm stoked. Looks like this will follow in the tradition of getting it right like Batman Begins did. About time a good version of the Joker made it to the big screen. Nicholson as the Joker was somehow even more campy than Cesar Romero( sp? ) and Tim Burton is a tool.
I think this look fits both with the personality I'd like to see portrayed (Killing Joke Joker) and with the realistic take on Batman that Begins went for. This truly looks like what the Joker would be if he were a real criminal in the modern world.
But what is with all the Heath Ledger hate? What has he been so bad in? Knights Tale? It was supposed to be campy fun, or did you think 'We Will Rock You' was a common jousting song. Lords of Dogtown? He effectively played a really eccentric character that reminded me a bit of a Depp performance. Ten Things I Hate About You? Was a just-breaking-into-the-business role in a teen flick (which compared to other entries in that genre, was decent). Joseph Gordon-Levitt was in it as well, should we consider him a poor actor despite his great roles in Brick, Manic, Havoc, The Lookout etc. etc.? The Patriot? He pulled off some great emotional scenes in a derivative 'Braveheart in America'. The Order? Monster's Ball? Ned Kelly?
The only poor film/performance I can think of for him is Brothers Grimm, and that film's screenplay was just ridiculous. I'm not sure how it even got made, let alone landed a few big names.

I actually hate political correctness... but I also hate ignorant people who make homophobic comments...

You guys are right.. this movie WILL be good. thanks for touching base
He looks amazing! I like the idea that he is truly disfigured into that hideous smile. My God, it looks like something we could actually find in the world!! Scary.
I love Nicholson, but this is going to be amazing (Hell, for me they made Scarecrow interesting).
PLEASE give me a fuckin' Harley Quiin. For the love of God and all that is holy... Please...
I don't like that idea at all. She's a fine cartoon character, but in a live action movie would be just annoying.
I have a hard time believing there will EVER be a Harley Quinn. She is just such a small side character (just the joker's girlfriend) and also a pretty new character in the batman universe (says my fanboy boyfriend). I don't really see why there would be a reason for her to ever show up in the movies. Other than eye candy....

from my understanding, the batman cartoons made her up - she wasn't in the comics before the cartoon came out. the most I expect from her is some side cameo, like doc connors in the spiderman movies.
I could probably count on one hand the times I've watched the Oscars, or any other awards show for that matter, but I am eagerly looking forward to tonight's broadcast. I thoroughly enjoyed watching Heath's performance, and I really hope that he gets the award tonight. All of the critics pics I have seen expect him to win.
I don't think I had ever seen anything he had been in before the Dark Knight, and I remember hearing all of the criticisms when it was announced he had gotten the role. Even now, reading back in this thread, I wonder if any of the people who had voiced their opinions negatively were won over by Heath's performance. I really enjoyed the previous Batman movie, and by the time this movie was released, with all of the hype that had preceded it from his performance to his tragic death, I was really hoping for something magical. I was not disappointed.
I'll probably watch it again this afternoon before I watch the awards show.
