Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails recently took to the band's website and dropped a bomb on fans. Take a second to brace yourselves: record labels are ripping off consumers.

Reznor used the example of the inflated price of the current NIN release, Year Zero, in Australia that is selling for $34.99 while Avril Lavigne's latest is going for $21.99. Reznor wrote:

By the way, when I asked a label rep about this his response was: "It's because we know you have a real core audience that will pay whatever it costs when you put something out - you know, true fans. It's the pop stuff we have to discount to get people to buy."
So... I guess as a reward for being a "true fan" you get ripped off.

The frontman also decried Euro Maxi-singles as old material repackaged only to make additional money. He declared he would no longer play a part in this exercise and promised that the upcoming Nine Inch Nails remix album will be "of substance."

there's a great little blurb in the current RS (which you should all pick up for the awesome 40th anniversary interviews within) about how his record label didn't understand his kick-ass ARG marketing strategy with Year Zero, because fans started to share the purposefully leaked songs (the flash drives found @ venues) on P2P networks...this one German kid got busted by the RIAA and paid $670...one month later, the label contacted him, refunded his money, gave him concert tix AND a backstage pass to meet NIN once they understood the marketing ploy

So... who is it that's ripping off fans with the high concert ticket prices these days?... I remember seeing Led Zeppelin in 1970, for example, (already by that time a supergroup selling out stadiums) for about $5 or slightly more than the price of an LP back then. Nowadays, I can afford to buy a CD at $15-20 but can seldom afford to pay the $40 to $60 or higher that big name bands are charging (I mean, tickets for Iggy recently were $45, Prince is asking about $90 starting price... don't know how much NIN charges)...

hurrah for Reznor. The guy is being honest, y'know. Moreover, he's providing to the public, proof of definitive behaviors of agents and agencies in the domain of commercially incorporated works of musical format.

To know that shit happens, it is one matter of knowledge.

To know some definnitive details of ow shit happens -- shit, it's a matter plainly of science.

Both times I saw NIN tickets were in the $30 range, but it's been a few years. The first time was with David Bowie, and the second with apc.

When I first heard fixed I couldn't stand it, now it's my favorite remix album. (I still can't say that I love with teeth though, it's just ... ok)

Amen to everything already said. It's really sad how art has been sucked up by big business. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. But it's nice to see those artists who really understand the score. Cheers Trent!

That is sad for those Aussies as Year Zero is a really good album. The same thing can be said about Linkin Park in the Us though. They are trying to sell their "special edition" album for $26 on their fan website while Best Buy charged $17.

I wasn't trying to be ironic with that. I was already ripping off a lot of the original material and didn't want to have a big quote, but a block didn't seem right for only two words.

So , yeah, my bad there. I personally have every confidence the remix album will be great.

You can blame Ticketmaster for that one. Pearl Jam tried to sue them, but lost. Sadly.
