Until now, Hollywood hearsay implied that Matt Damon had secured the role of a young(ish) Captain Kirk in the upcoming Star Trek prequel. Rumors on the Paramount lot now suggest that indie-golden boy Ryan Gosling (Half Nelson, The Notebook) is up for the role. According to Cinemablend,

For some strange reason though, the rumor comes from uber-geek comedian Patton Oswalt who says he heard Gosling wants to be Kirk. Kind of a strange source, but at least it’s not an anonymous one. Anyway Oswalt says he Gosling wants to run the bridge, and he thinks it’d be pretty cool.

Although Gosling has been getting rave reviews for his performance in Fracture, and he did get an Oscar nod for his role in Half Nelson, I think the jury's still out on who could best reprise the role made famous by William-Fucking-Shatner. Whomever director J.J. Abrams chooses, the production better get busy because the prequel is set to hit theaters December 2008.

I hate prequels. Who cares about Kirk? I want to know what happens to the EMH and Seven of Nine after they return to the Alpha Quadrent!

Abrams should scrap the fucking prequel idea and go forward, not backward. Either do something completely new or take up where one of the spinoff series left off. Gene Roddenberry is turning over in his grave.
I wonder what Wil Wheaton thinks?

It will have to be Gosling. Everyone knows that to be a credible spaceship captain the actor should be Canadian....

1.William Shatner: The Kirk
2. Nathan Fillion: Mal from Firefly
3. Lorne Greene: Battlestar Galactica

And now, Gosling!

I fucking hate prequels. It's such a pussy way to write a story, because you already know how your principle characters are going to end up. You don't have to make any important decisions.

Yet Han Solo, the greatest pilot in the history of space pilots, is from Chicago.

Last I heard 7 was doing forced public sex acts and the EMH is on Stargate SG-1, but I do agree the whole idea is boring I was really hoping for a DS9 movie as they left the ending soooooooo open for more. I was really a trek geek till Enterprise I wouldnt watch it on principle. They fucked with the klingon head plate time line and it pissed me off. I

What!!

I honestly think it would be a bad career move for him to do this movie. Let fuckin Matt Damon do that shit.

I honestly hope he keeps picking and choosing roles like he has up to this point. I've really loved everything he's been in thus far.

Oh gods, you mean they're actually going through with that Star Trek prequel? Hasn't Berman frelled the franchise up enough!? And you know there's going to be a half-naked woman in there somewhere, because it's Berman! I mean, Kirk! No, I mean Berman.

...And moving on from Berman to prequels...

Who remembers the Twin Peaks movie? As far as I can recall, that was the first prequel that was a bad idea, possibly the first prequel ever. We'd watched Cooper figure out everything we see in that movie, and everyone would rather have seen what happens after Bob gets into him.

Of course, it was George Lucas that ruined the reputation of prequels forever. So naturally Berman has to have a go now. Oh look, full circle.

1). I think Damon looks more like a young Kirk.

2). I loved Enterprise blackeyed, but I hated it's theme song.

3). Why all the prequels, remakes, and adaptations of old TV shows? Because Hollywood hasn't had an original thought since sometime in the mid 60's. I thought that was common knowledge.
