I have an ultimate goal in mind with my art and animation. I eventually want to draw simple, super clean cartoons like "the simpsons", "Daria", and "Batman: the animated series" but with a high frame rate, an anime and hong kong action sensibility and an art direction that is Jet Grind Radio all the way.

One of the many things I think I need to improve on if I ever hope to acheive that kind of style is to get a better handle on fashion. If I draw people in modern or sci fi settings, admittedly something I haven't done in a while because of a huge project, they tend to wear jeans, sneakers, and a t-shirt. Even the girls. Now I'm all for that look but I am in dire need of a little variety.

It just recently dawned on me that this site will be an excellent reference for the kind of fashion, hairstyles, and make up styles I'm looking for. For some reason I don't associate this site with clothes. smile But can anyone point me to some other references for fashion in what I still think of in general as the "alternative" style. I need some inspiration.

If you want an ultra cool lookin look for an animation and ultra cool dress sence, i'd say look at Cherrys pics. She has amazing style, which could easily be addapted or used as a style guide.
I m sorry i can't point you in any directions for brands or anything like that .

i second that...Cherry is definitely the person to ask about style and different types of fashion. and if i'm not mistaken you can also try looking through the groups there might be a fashion one.

I'd also recommend going to clubs... get a sense for what people wear to certain types of nightspots... different musical genres lend themselves to different crowds and completely different styles sometimes... you could make an interesting study on the subject in a fairly short period of time.

The Suicide Girls site is a great resource in general. But I was thinking of maybe other sites, fashion mags, etc. I'm interested in both male and female fashion or looks or whatever you want to call it. I don't see any fashion groups here. If there are any, they don't have the word "fashion" in their group name. I did join the art group there. I'm going to post basically the same message there as here and see what the peoples can throw my way.

You can get a free membership to Japanese Streets, which has TONS of fashion pics, including the more tech look. Also check out the book Fruits, its a coffee table book of Japanese fashion.

Not to say that the Japanese have more fashion necessarily, but these two places have variety unimaginable.

Cherry does seem to have a style after my own heart. I love the--would you call them leggings? with the star pattern and the old style converse shoes from the park photo shoot. I absolutely love Aries' hair. I had a look at amazon.com and went ahead and bought Fruits. (Incidentally, with a Shonen Kinfe CD. It's official, I'm a Japan-o-file.) Fruits seems to be just the sort of thing I'm looking for. I'm happy to learn that there are a lot of books like this. And Japanese streets looks pretty cool to me too. I think that I might also like hip hop fashion (I can already hear some of you groaning). ooo aaa

Sorry to butt in, but animation at a high frame-rate is a waste of time and looks stupid.

That Japanese Streets page is awesome. I'll never want for reference material ever. I've seen big ass Japanese street fashion books in stores, but this'll save me $40.
