Fountains of Wayne give to the new millennium what Cheap Trick gave to the '70s: meticulously crafted power-pop songs with mountainous hooks, delivered with equal doses of absurdity and absolute sincerity. Like a well-written children's story, their songs can be appreciated on multiple levels. For example, the cheery melody of "Bright Future In Sales" off their new album Welcome Interstate Managers belies its story of a down-on-his-luck salesman, struggling to come to grips with his life and new...
The Fountains are one of the best pop-rock groups that I have ever heard. They are able to combine the melodicism of the Beach Boys with the wordplay of (don't kill me) Bob Dylan, without the grandstanding and pompous air that accompany either of those 'deities.' I love the country-twang flavor that they included in this disc as well. The pseudo-lounge-funk of "Halley's Waitress" is also a nice breather on the disc. The lyrics are wonderfully funny and I think everyone can relate to this Barry White-meets-Average-White-Boy track. I also believe that "All Kinds of Time" is the first song to recall a play-by-play football scene and make it sound so good. Fountains of Wayne have managed to score another \m/(-_-)\m/ in my book.
I love Fountains of Wayne. A bit nostalgic for me, they were the first band I saw play live in 96'. They are a fucking incredible pop-rock band for sure. Good interview as well.
the fountains of wayne is the garden store in NJ... look for it on the sopranos... it was the one tony ran into charles dutton working at... the cop he got fired.
i'm down with the fountains... sink to the bottom type shit.
I was flipping through the channels one night a few years ago and caught the debut of the video for "Denise" off of "Utopia Parkway". I went out and bought the album the next day and have been a fan ever since. I haven't had a chance to pick up their new album yet, sadly, but it won't be long now. They are one of the better bands out there right now.
