Hi. I didn't have enough energy to read this entire thread, or else I would have seen that the Knicks/Heat series had been brought up already.
Nah, the greatest playoffs upset was when the Rat City Allstars actually beat the the Texas Texecutioners in the Dust Devil 2007 Western Regional Tournament. And not even in the final bout (meaning Texas couldn't rank higher than third overall).
Then again, if one of the East Coast teams beats Seattle at the nationals in Austin, that'd be a major upset. I'd wanna say that Carolina would have the best shot at pulling something like that off, though yeah, rather unlikely. I'm thinking Seattle, Tucson or Austin. Haven't seen or heard much about NYC's, so I couldn't comment on their odds. There are some good teams in the Midwest that'd probably do well in the Eastern regionals. Not sure if the Canadian leagues can even participate.
Subrosa I can agree with you, that statistically this is the greatest upset in US sports playoff history. In my opinion I think that the Denver series was a bigger upset.
1) For various reasons I think that Mavericks are the worst team in NBA history to achieve 60+ wins.
Starting with a seven footer that can't establish post position on defenders six inches shorter (Nowitski), continuing on to a guard who misses shots if the defender stomps his foot hard(Terry), and continuing on to a coach that truly seems to believe his team lost because they were "out efforted".
The victory was earned through the execution of a game plan similar to the Miami Heat last year. The Warriors if anything proved that the Mavericks only won so many games because most of the current NBA teams are not so concerned with having a 70 win season, but are concerned about getting into the playoffs.
Don Nelson did a masterful job coaching his team to effectively defend a "team" that supposedly had them outmatched at all positions except for point guard. Messing up the 2 or 3 bread and butter plays that the Mavs have, by moving Nowitski off the blocks. As for the offensive output of the Warriors, the plan was simple, create good spacing, go to the basket, cut often and shoot plenty of 3's. That kind of strategy executed as simply as it was does not work well against good defensive teams.
2) Some one did already mentioned the injury riddled season that the Warriors went through, and in this scenario it does make a huge difference. A healthy Baron Davis through out the year might have given them 10 more wins, he missed 21 games, and was unhealthy for at least 20 other games this season. Richardson, who is another key component to the team only managed to play 51 games this season. They are a much better team than their record indicates.
I watched all of this series, and I also watched the Denver Nuggets take down the Seattle (Super ) Sonics. I have to say this wasn't that surprising compared to the Nuggets victory. Seattle actually was the superior team, and was favored to make it to the championship round. Seattle was Gary Payton, Sean Kemp, Nate Mcmillan and coached well by George Karl. The Nuggets were Dikembe Mutombo and the misfits coached by Dan Issel (you might be asking yourself, who??) Additionally the Sonics whooped the Nuggets the first 2 games of the series in a best of 5 format. The Nuggets had to win 3 in a row, and win the last in Seattle, where the Sonics had a 39 out of 43 record for the season and playoffs so far.
Don't get me wrong, I loved that the Warriors defeated the Mavericks, but to me, that Nuggets victory will always seem more impressive.
The Warriors have a good chance against Utah, but as was demonstrated tonight the match ups don't favor them (rebounding anyone?) and Jerry Sloan although he only runs 3-4 plays on offense, he has his teams run them really well. The two prominent ones being the UCLA cut and of all things a simple pick and roll, the Mavericks aren't even capable of running those effectively. Still, I am rooting for the Warrior regardless, they have brought some excitement to the game this year!!
