I am a Captain in a Civil Affairs Unit. Civil Affairs is part of U.S. Army Special Operations. The textbook definition of our job is to facilitate military operations and consolidate operational activities by assisting commanders through establishing, maintaining, influencing, or exploiting relations between military forces and civil authorities, both governmental and nongovernmental, and the civilian population in a friendly, neutral, or hostile area of operations.

Let's not jump to conclusions. First we try to drown her. If she doesn't drown, then we know she's a witch and we burn her.

What also floats in water?

... Bread! ...Apples! ... Uh, very small rocks! Cider! Gra- Gravy! Cherries! Mud! Churches! Churches! Lead! Lead!

A duck!

Exactly. So... logically ...

If... she ... weighs.. the same.. as a duck ... she's made of wood.

And therefore?

A witch! A witch! A witch!

WOW!! It's so good to know that the good ol' U.S. of A. is always there, willing to lend a helping hand. Sure, we may kill children, but it's all in the name of PEACE! And, how Punk Rock is it to be in the U.S. Fuckin' MILITARY? Or, let me re-phrase that: How Punk Rock is it to be a Well-Fed-Slave? A TRUE Punk wouldn't be in today's military in the first place! They CERTAINLY wouldn't have ANYTHING to do with a BULLSHIT war. TRUE Punks are out there PROTESTING our occupation in Iraq. So, GOOD MORNING PEOPLE! There IS no Punk Rock in Iraq. Just the MTV version: Mindless, Pointless.

I am quite sure it was not up to Punk whether or not our fine countries invaded iraq. The guy is doing his job , and a hard one at that.
I know a lot of guys in the army and one senior guy in the navy and they do a lot of good in between wars that you never hear about . They are proud of what they do..And i would imagine that most of them feel the same about the last war as we do.
If you want to write in protest do it on your governments web site , cause its them that make the decisions, or vote out Bush and his oil loving henchmen, its them who send our men out to die for political and economic gain. .Don't do it on some guys site who is just doing his job and telling it like it is, something which we all need to hear to avoid total ignorance.

Thanks for taking the time Brian..

Whether or not I believe in the reasons for this war, it seems like Brian and his guys are doing a good job of improving a bad situation.

And Punk Rock isn't about doing things or not doing things cause they are or aren't punk rock. It is living you life by your own rules, and if to him that means the army than GO BRIAN!

hold up, you can't let people off the hook on the basis that they're "just doing their job" when they chose the job. and i don't know why i'm reading a pro military write up on this site when i can watch fox news for that shit. i want to hear brian talk about the issues, not how the us army is doing a good thing, or even "just doing their job."

more civilians have been killed in iraq than were killed in the world trade center attack. we haven't found any weapons, and we haven't found saddam hussein. and us soldiers are getting picked off every day. i'd like to hear one of the soldiers talk about how they feel about that stuff.

Yeah, when I was working on this I had a few questions I wish he'd answered too, but I imagine he's a little busy nowadays. I think his silence on those issues speaks a lot of his opinion on the subject. The fact that he'd rather talk about the good things that he's doing and his belief in his mission than politics speaks volumes.

Wouldn't the phrase "Ours is not to ask why, but to do or die." kindof appropriate in regard to this piece?

i think it's great that we're putting up member stories and of course we all know that we should be nice to eachother and not personally attack anyone. and the Eris loves to read shit from all sorts of points of views, as i imagine many members of the site do as well. first person accounts are always interesting insights.

but if we are talking about "what punk is" i would like to just interject that the ideals behind punk are real, not just some wierd statement of "i do what i want" or "fuck the man." there is an honest undercurrent of counter culture movement tied to punk rock.

it's like saying "i'm an anarchist." sure, you can, but there ARE actually theories about anarchism that you could study if you wanted. or, ya know, you could just buy a CRASS patch and draw a circled A on the tips of your black chucks. either way. but i don't think punk rock is as subjective as that. (especially on a website where you have people that very strongly identify with the "do it yourself" ethic and who live in a way to counter cookie cutter personalities - i realize, of course, that inherently everything creates a following, people conforming to nonconformists - however, the doesn't change the intent and ultimate defintion of punk rock.)

i don't think something is punk rock because you like it. or punk rock because you don't. i caveat the idea of the military being punk rock not being controversial on a site like as sg.

with all that said, i'll say again it was an interesting read and maybe one day i'll argue safely within the confines CE.
