Women are now free to roam dark alleyways rape-free with the help of RapeX, the first and only anti-rape condom. Ladies need only insert this magical device into their vagina and they are assured that the next man to try to enter them will get more than they bargained for. The special condom is designed to hook into the penis upon penetration and cannot be removed without the aide of a doctor. This vicious defense has raised some concerns that have impeded the initial release of anti-rape condoms, but South Africa needn't wait any longer.

The product will be on the shelves of South African chemists and supermarkets later this month. South African mother-of-two Sonette Ehlers developed the original prototype in 2005 but has struggled to get it patented and approved for sale, not least because of staunch opposition from feminist groups.

RapeX claims to be deterrent to rape, but some are skeptical that it will only increase a rapist's violent behavior. And some feminist groups are pissed that women are expected to shape their life to the threat of rape. But at least RapeX makes it harder for a man with a cylinder attached to his penis to squirm out of a rape accusation.

You'd think that would make an already violent person <the rapist> more violent when they get their junk all mangled.frown

Haha, yes!

But no.

I think this is designed for the prevention of stranger-in-a-dark-alley rapes. Far more common is sexual assault by someone who the woman knows and trusts. In which case, she wouldn't be wearing one of *these*.

i see a big risk of "girl puts rapex in so she won't get raped, goes out on the town, gets hammrered, goes home with guy she really does want to get it on with, forgets rapex is in, injures would-be one-night stand forever."

Erm...wouldn't it make the guy bleed? And therefore make the victim more likely to get HIV or some other infection?

ummm, but see, rape can happen in any part of the body.. I don't see a woman inserting this into her anus or keeping it in her mouth. or a man doing the same, for that matter.

I'm all for inflicting as much violence on rapists as possible...always have been. But, I can see this product turning a rapist into a murderer real quick. Still, I'd like to see some psycho with his junk chewed up. Hmmm....

This is an excellent point.

So is this. On top of that, sexual assault does not require a penis.

I completely agree. It's a bold idea but I just don't see it having the desired affect in the long run...

Assuming that a would be rapist knows about this product, the only snag this really poses is that he now must perform a cursory finger probe to check for hooks and barbs before committing his crime.

I'm all for preventing rape but I also fail to see how, in the long term, this will lessen the amount of crimes perpetrated against women (or men for that matter) and share in the worry that it will only be a catalyst in making an already horrible situation worse.

that reminds me of a girl who had sex with a girl and forgot she had a tampon in while they were both extremely fucked up and had to have the tampon surgurically removed.

or, I hate to say it, just go for the back door.

And honestly, don't you think that he'd just get really pissed and just beat her to death? I suppose that when he trys to pull out, the condom will come out and stay stuck to his dick until a doctor removes but, come on.

So in short, it will only be effective against stupid rapists. I've heard of prevention being better than cure, but I don't think this is it.

Yeah, that's true. I would be more scared of anal rape after that, but don't forget you have teeth, you wouldn't need it for your mouth, heh. But I think that if a man tried to rape said victim and got the thing stuck on him, he wouldn't be able to put it anywhere else.

I wouldn't mind having it around just in case I knew I was going to be walking down any scary parts of town alone.. whatever

I can see how it would make the person more violent though. I can also see why feminist groups would be angry for the reason that it just reminds women of the threat and scariness of it all.

It does seem to get recycled every so often. Especially since the product debuted in 2005 and we all discussed it then...

But you will still get raped. It just won't last very long.
