This whole argument seems so utterly fucking stupid to me.

I'd buy one of those figures if every geek store in the state weren't completely sold-out. smile

Yay for sensationalist news articles about completely inconsequential bullshit designed to get lots of hits! Geez. Could you have possibly skewed this any more? It's an action figure. He never actually committed rape. He was in a movie where a woman went around killing shit tons of guys, and the guy was essentially castrated in it. It's not like they made an anatomically correct action figure of a rapist, complete with victim in a playset.

Yes, I understand you must have meant the original, but thanks for making me smile.

no no no, whoever wrote THIS post is a baby... eh... nevermind... yeah it's just a fuckin doll of someone in a movie... ooo... kids are going to buy it and rape people... because they get their moral lessons from an action figure.. um, i've seen his action figures before, for reservoir dogs, the cop was strapped to a chair and you had an option of having his head with or without an ear... i mean, if parents are buying these for their kids then we should worry abot what the parents are teaching their kids, not a doll. people who enjoy the movie now have a little piece of memorabilia, what's the world coming too. just calm down and go look at naked chicks on SG and get over yourself. oh and for the record, rape can be funny... imagine minnie mouse being raped by daffy duck... sorry carlin didn't say it exactly like that but i couldn't pass up a george carlin rape joke here...

No, rape can't be funny. Very occasionally (as evidenced above) a joke about rape can be funny (see Sarah Silverman).

George Bernard Shaw has a wonderful quote that says, "Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
More to the point, I don't see how a human being can go through life without finding humor in the horrible things that happen. If I couldn't laugh at the shit that life throws at me, I'd have to fucking kill myself.

I'm not trying to argue with you I'd just like to understand your view point better. I completely understand the view that you have to be able to laugh at shit that "life throws at [me]". It sorta derives from the principle that if you take yourself to seriously life is going to be stifling.

But does that make it entirely appropriate to laugh at other's suffering? I could be wrong**, but I can't recall a single comedian going off on the topic of rape.

Someone has already quoted the George Carlin routine on rape. I posted a video link to a comedian (Sarah Silverman) doing a routine that included rape as well. Professional comedians are the last people to put anything outside the purview of humor.

I feel like I'm going to be quoting quite a bit in this one, but...
Mel Brooks said, "Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you walk into an open sewer and die." Outside of mildly humorous wordplay (puns and such), comedy is mean. All good jokes involve someone suffering in some way.

It's just not funny, to me anyway. Moreover, would making jokes about VTech be appropriate? Why or why not? Too soon? Because it does seem to fall into principle that your Shaw quotation insinuates. --curious

Sure, why not.

Matt Stone and Trey Parker (see, I told you the quotes were gonna keep coming) made a comment in an interview that I think is one of the most profound things I've ever seen a celebrity say. Paraphrasing here (as I don't have the quote in front of me), they said, "If we don't joke about something because it's not OK to joke about it, that's like saying all the other stuff we have joked about was OK."

No, joking about vtech wouldn't trivialize it. But if we make anything a sacred cow. If anything gets special treatment and becomes immune to jokes, then we have trivialized everything else. We've trivialized all those other things we joke about. If you can't joke about vtech, but can about 9/11 or Columbine, then we have trivialized those things. If you can't joke about rape, but can tell dead baby jokes, then you've trivialized the pain of women with miscarriages or anyone who has lost a child.

Everything causes someone, somewhere pain. Everything hits too close to home or pesters that open emotional wound for someone. So, it's all or nothing - either everything is fair game for jokes or nothing is. And if nothing is, then we've become a society of eggshell-walking pansies.

Last quote, I swear, and this one comes from my roommate, so I'm not even going to attribute it. He realized he was becoming really upset over some of the jokes on South Park that conflicted with some deeply held beliefs of his. Finally, he said, "...and then I realized it was just my turn to be upset." Everybody get's their turn being at the bottom of the shitter, and you can't get upset at the people who joke when you come up with the short straw this week.

Exactly.

Everyone has their turn. And sometimes, you just gotta laugh at it. In 2001, my mum had a severe brain injury because of a stroke. Then i saw that episode of the simpsons with the waiter

"What's wrong with you?"
"I had a stttrrroooookkkkkee"

Did i laugh? Hell yes. I also had a part of me that cringed but if i didnt laugh, i would have cried.

Everyone does deal with things in their own way and everyone has their turn of the short straw. It's just unfortunate it seems to be Bitch_PhD turn nearly every week.

Rape jokes are really funny. So are dead baby jokes. So are "I (plane) NY" t-shirts. So are Jew jokes. Everything that is offensive is also incredibly funny. If we can laugh at something, we can shed our fear of it, and we can be more productive in fighting it.

I laughed just reading about the "I (plane) NY" shirts!
