Its the same problem with the Confederate flag. Just because the bearer may not mean to say "I hate black people", that person must still be minimally comfortable with the fact that it will be taken to mean "I hate black people."
Except that in this case Ferry isn't bearing the confederate flag, he's just saying it's pretty.
Just because the aesthetic was used to serve a political purpose, doesn't mean aesthetic and purpose have become inseperable forever.
