I would say...remove it from public buildings. It has no place in contemporary society. The Confederate flag does have its place in the public eye....and that place is in a historical context; museums, Confederate battlefields and other historical locations.

In SC, having the flag flying atop the State House was, in a symbolic sense, a question of jurisdiction, i.e., the US flag is top most, and the state flag below - a secondary allegiance. The Confederate battle flag?? Even as a symbol of the CSA, this jurisdiction hasn't existed for 142 years. This is another result of the Civil War - the Federal trumps the State. Taking the Southern Cross down from the State House resolved the jurisdiction question. What remains, as Subrosa said, is poor public policy.

It's hard to know where to draw the line, though. If the NAACP or other organization wanted to expunge all Confederate symbols and trappings from "public buildings" - including flags - you'd have literally hundreds of County Courthouses all over the South with very prominent statues and Confederate memorials to deal with.

here's two cents worth from a South Carolinian and Gamecock fan....

the flag should not be flying...we do not fly other government flags, such as the French, Spanish, or British flags (flags of other nations that were in control of various pieces of land at one time or another throughout the United States) and the flag of the C.S.A. shoudl be no different. put it in a display case at the memorial, and other memorials and museums....

Steve Spurrier is the man....he shows leadership both off and on the field. All of you Steve Spurrier haters out there, you are going to be hating him even more over the next few years as he turns the Gamecock football program into a powerhouse smile i know i know as a Gamecock fan I should know that every coach that has gone to South Carolina has retired or died, but hey keep in mind, the Boston Red Sox finally won the World Series! the program is on the up and up....the losses we had, with the exception of Georgia, came down to the wire, and if one play or penalty call had gone our way in each of those games we would have won. sure we did not win, but for the first time in years we have been competitive with nationally ranked teams.

It's a pretty ballsy move by Spurrier, no matter what you think of the flag.

Actually, I think it's the safe call for him. No one is going to run him out of town at USC. He's Spurrier. They need him or their team will continue to suck. However, even if the state decides not to remove the flag he can say to out-of-state recruits who might be offended that "he's on their side" or "we can work to get things changed together" "be a part of something bigger than just football" etc.

I guarantee you he uses this speech and the press from it for recruiting.

Note, I don't think there's anything remotely wrong with that.

Just about every major sports coach in South Carolina said the same thing before Spurrier, Holtz and Tommy Bowden included. It's not as if he is breaking new ground.

The swastika is illegal here in Germany - why not make teh Confederate Southern Cross illegal as well. That would really screw the Jerks of Hazzard....

While I think we're on the same side here, things are a bit different here in the states. Just about the only way you'd get me on the same side as the confederate flag morons would be to pass a law making it illegal.

Once you pass a law banning the expression of a certain idea, you effectively make it seem more right to certain types of (generally stupid) people. This is why flag-burning laws have actually INCREASED the numbers of flag-burnings in the U.S.

Swastikas are legal here in the U.S. They actually come in handy for the same reasons that Confederate flags do. They let me know that the wearer or bearer is an idiot. A stupider and more evil idiot than the guy with the Confederate flag (unless he's a Civil War reenactor).

Hey, I ran into those two "stupid people" last weekend. P & T are the coolest. And I could picture them doing that trick, too. They had Extreme Elvis play at a party they held. The story goes that either Lance Diamond or David Copperfield got a bit irate when Extreme Elvis peed on his leg. Not sure if that was the same party that someone made a production about Teller being crucified or not. Wish I'd been invited.
